Brick Flicks and Comics Academy

Hello animators, comic writers and fans!

Judging by the success of the Reviewers Academy and some of the photoshop and picture tutorials on our site, I would like to try out a test group for a possible Brick Flicks and Comics Academy. The activity in this forum is pretty slow and I think with some work, we can change that. Volunteers needed should be skilled in stop motion filming or comic creation. We will also need volunteers who are interested in being students.

So please reply to this thread if you are interested and we will put together a beta group in about two weeks and see if this is something viable we can do here.

I dabbled in Brickfilming before becoming a true MOCer, and I do have a bit of experience with comics from the RA. Now armed with a fairly new camera and Photoshop CS5, I'm ready to try it again. I'd love to be a student.

How does the reviewers academy work? Are students paired with instructors for one on one mentoring? Is there a curriculum decided on by a panel of instructors? I'm just curious what shape this is going to take. I am potentially interested in being an instructor, but I'd want to get a better sense of the time commitment first. I think it's a great idea, but I don't want to sign on to something I won't be able to sustain.

Hooray! Responses. I will include anyone who is interested. More info to come this weekend. Basically what will happen is I'll start a private sub-forum where we can meet and brainstorm about the concept.

It has no shape yet, but we'll decide that as a group. Glad to hear you're somewhat interested. I had you in mind, of course.

Obviously I have no idea what this Brick Flicks and Comics Academy will be like, but since you specifically asked about it, in the RA there are a bunch of teachers. A student has the option of reading the tutorials posted, and then they post a review in the forum. Some RA teachers will read it and tell you what you need to fix to get the review passed. There are quite a few RA members, both teachers and students, who aren't always active, and there are no time limits in the RA.

Yes, it could be one or the other or both. We're not going to force anybody to learn anything they don't want to.

I was thinking that it could be done "class style" where instructors will collaborate on making lessons (or have it that each imparts their knowledge) and then the students will have to do what was taught for homework. Example: The first lesson might be setting up the camera and the set and starting with a simple walk cycle, and each student would have to do that. Instructors would be available for help. Once the student has completed the assignment, they can move on to the next lesson.

I think this would work well enough, but it's just one way to do things .

What sort of topics were you thinking of covering? I'm assuming practical stop motion techniques will be foregrounded? But what about that first step: "Hey, I've got an idea!"? If we can help enthusiasts with the execution AND the content, who knows how awesome their projects could be!

As a film student who's been making promotional videos on the side, I'd be thrilled to contribute to this Academy. Perhaps I could put together some hints and tips on how to tell a story well? How to really do your idea justice, that sort of thing. Maybe I could create a post or a video aspiring brickfilmers can always return to? (I'd be the lazy bum writing a "book" others can, if they should please, refer to when doing the actual teaching.)

Would something like that fit into your concept of the Academy?

I'd like to second that! I'm workin' in theatre business and find this to be a very thoughtful point. While I'm not a native speaker ov English, I'd like to contribute to this area as well if needed.
