[COR - Aug FB2] Abigail Park Barracks, Mooreton Bay

Recommended Posts

Soldiers need somewhere to live too, so a barracks complex has been started in Abigail Park, a reserve close to the centre of the settlement of Mooreton Bay. Constructed of rough convict hewn sandstone, similar to Fort Denison, canny observers will note firing slits in the ground floor of the utilitarian structure.

A while ago Major Dirk Allcock was able to arrange for a shipment of the New Pattern muskets that are starting to equip Corlander line regiments back in the old world. The detachment of the Light Company of the 47th Regiment of Foot that he commands will be armed with the new musket as a New World trial.

Here, they conduct a demonstration of the new musket. Some Royal Marines, including the newly promoted Captain Stewart , together with some visiting Naval Officers, have come to watch the demonstration, as the new pattern musket has yet to be approved for Marine or Naval use.

A quick build mainly to show off the Brick Arms muskets I was able to obtain at Canberra Brick Expo earlier in the month. I'll license the barracks as a residence.

Any resemblance in the uniforms on the targets to the uniforms to those of other nations is purely... well intentional... :pir-grin: you've got to train how you expect to fight right?!? I'm sure someone will call me a warmonger in outrage but seriously, no malice intended to our bluecoat friends :pir-sweet:

Oh and the cannon design is from Captain Braunsfeld's Eslandolean 8th Army MOC.

Lovely barracks - and being that Mooreton Bay is a penal settlement, it probably makes sense that it seems mostly like a fortress against one's own inhabitants. A handy stronghold to have, should the settlement be faced with an uprising!

The building looks very sturdy and fits well with the other sandstone structures. My only gripe is the landscaping. The orange/green plates seem a bit unnatural, as they almost form a pattern, rather than appear random texture of the ground.

Btw, nice muskets and quite an army! Mooreton Bay is well defended!

(And I almost thought Cooke was there, but evidently, it is another naval officer in same uniform! :) Once I get a small story scene posted, Cooke and Montoya will visit! Hopefully within the next few days :) )

Very nice build, Ayrlego, the barracks look nice while still suitably rough, and you have quite an impressive array of soldiery there! pirate_satisfied.gif A couple of my favorite details are the firing slits in the lower wall, and the color of the target uniforms (pir_laugh2.gifpirate_laugh2.gif), but the cannon and roof are excellent as well  I do have to agree with Bregir about the terrain, though - probably placing a few of the 2x1 plates in the other orientation would help, as they currently almost look like they are all pointing towards the targets pir_laugh2.gif

Very nice job with the barracks. It does have a very rough finish, though; it looks like it has been the subject of target practice! But a great excuse to show off the lads in uniform and their new equipment. I need to find an excuse to do the same with some Eslandolan troops I've been working on.

Back to the build: the arrow slits are well done, I like that you have a kneeling rank of riflemen (musketmen? fusiliers? what is the proper term?), and the target dummies are an excellent touch! I'll agree with the others that there's something not quite right about the ground, but that is a difficult area for me in my builds as well, and I think it is only a minor issue for this build. It is much better than plain, undetailed tan plate. All-in-all an excellent MOC!

P.S. If one were to license a barracks, what would it be?

A nice, solid build, though i have to agree on the ground comments and i will add that the building color is strange too as there are large patches of the same color that makes it look like a modern military uniform. Having smaller bits of the same color on the wall (as in fort Denison) looks better in my opinion.

PS: Dont get me start on the targeting puppets...! :-p

Nice looking barracks. Those earth tones work well together, but they might look better if they were more interspersed. The roof is nice too. The ground level slits are an interesting feature.

Your army looks great and the practice scene is fine; it seems two can play the game of firing at fully-dressed targets, aye?

The ground texture makes perfect sense to me: after firing, wouldn't the soldiers check the targets? It seems this would result in a roughly linear back-and-forth wear to the ground surface. At least that's what came to mind when I saw the first pic.

Anyway, nice addition to the colony.:classic:

Thank you everyone for the comments.

I agree in retrospect the ground could definitely use some more work. Captain Dee is correct in that I orentatied the plates all the same way to indicate the direction of movement - but it doesn't quite work does it!

P.S. If one were to license a barracks, what would it be?

I licensed it as a residence as I figured that was the closest match.
