Niels VDV's Lego Technic Tatra T815 Trial Truck

Recommended Posts

On YouTube, Niels VDV (niels125521) posted three YouTube videos of his Lego Technic Tatra T815 trial truck. The
shows its impressive climbing ability (using standard Lego tires and wheels). The
shows its suspension travel over various obstacles. It is "a lego tatra t815 with halfaxles, 8x8 drive and 4x8 steering. uses 2 xl's for driving and 1m for steering. Brickshelf photos: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=451447 " contains 17 BIG pictures. The T815 model weighs 2.48 kilograms.

The third (15 second) YouTube video shows it rolling over a log:

thx for the comments :p never thought to see my tatra posted here.

about the angle, this isn't the best it can. a friend of me made a movie of me driving the truck at a lego event in Belgium. we had a plate and we were testing who could ge the best angle, and in that movie, it does an even beter angle, i gues it was between 60 en 75 degrees :) i think this angle is accomplisched by the weight, it is pretty balanced, and2.48 kilo isn't bad for a 8x8, i think :s

@ nielsvdv: Are you going to add this new 8x8 to your (other) Tatra T815 "Loprais" trial truck posted on BrickTruckTrial.com ?

@ Dluders : well, if anybody would like me to do it, i will :)

@ jurgen : i only went to a Belug event with it, and we only have me and 2 others who make trucktrials.. so there just isn't any competition, we just come togheter and look what the others have. we have a full lego circuit, but it proved to be a litle small for the truck. my friend stevenA made a video of the trucks @ the event, i will post it as soon it comes out.

one of the other builders told me to make instructions for it, unfortunately i am not into the whole "lets make lego on a screen thingy'. i like to keep it real :p but i tried but i failed with the program..

i have the truck built as it is for over a month, and i did A LOT of playing and testing. the only part that broke was a 16t from the driveschaft. i drove it over a towel, didn't think that a piece of cloth jamming the gears would cause it to snap... the 2 xl's really deliver a lot of co-op torque :)

(i was thinking of tearing it apart, i have a few improvements in my head, like my new pf remote gearbox..)

sorry for my english

It is very impressive! I was surprised that for a truck of that size to be able to climb that steep of a ramp..

Looks great! The suspension looks really flexy. I like the exo cage around the cab.

I noticed this as well. I was just working on a truck myself that uses turntables as joints giving it 360 un-needed degrees of rotation and attached a rubberband to make it come back to its normal starting position. The turntable has lots of friction and in turn, does not like to move back to its normal place.. Maybe I should lubricate it..

As for the drivetrain in your truck.. Does it use only 1 xl motor for drive? Because if it does, and even if it doesn't , that is a very nice and secure system of gearing..

thx

the drivetrain uses 2xl's, i managed to fiddle them in :) the axle coming from the xl's passes underneed the 3rd axle's springs, its a very close call when the suspension is fully pushed. but it works perfect :) the power is enormeous... the xl's wont stall, it has eaten already a 16 t :p a piece of cloth jammed it..

to give an example of its robustnes, i made a very strong 12 wheel trailer, loaded a lot of book on it and attached it to the truck.. i stopped loading books when it came to 30 kilo's :p and it even took corners :)
