Heroica RPG - Quest #147: Judgment Day

Recommended Posts

A dark figure strides through the halls of Eschaton. His cane echoed in the silence with every tap - he didn't need it for walking, but it concealed something else he needed - and his wings bounced up and down with every step. The figure stares out through the stained glass windows, his shadow washed out in their projected light, and smiles momentarily. He finds himself in front of a pair of ivory doors, and with a slight nudge, steps into his master's chamber.

NhqSeTs.png

"Today is the day."

The dragon seemed distant.

OOh2Xi8.png

"Yes. It is."

NhqSeTs.png

"...Why do we do this anymore, boss? You probably knew what these representatives were going to say before you even sent out for them - I know your visions have only gotten better over time. So why bother risking Eschaton's secrets with this song and dance? I like these people well enough, but we also must understand that the knowledge in Eschaton..."

OOh2Xi8.png

"...Is some of the very same knowledge we had to erase cities for knowing. I'm aware. And you're not entirely correct - I know a myriad paths these people may take. But when it comes to judgment, sometimes the path someone thinks they're walking is the most important of all."

NhqSeTs.png

"I see. And I trust your judgment. I certainly hope Eubric will, also... No matter what the verdict may be."

QM Note: Welcome to Judgment Day! You have 24 hours to confirm. Right now, I'm leaving your stats out until you all do any marketplace trips.

Jinnipher crossed her arms, for once not the last hero to show up. "Look, Dragonlord. I've dealt with this big lizard's offspring, and he was nothing but a pushover. Once we stopped his magic and fear controlling the fearful, it was a piece of cake. These dragons, they like to play mind games. You should know. It's nothing but big talk." She waved her hand dismissively and raised an eyebrow. It was hard to tell if the expression was serious or sarcastic. "Now what do you think you know about him?"

Karie enters the hall, a toy kazoo hanging out of her mouth as she plays a jaunty tune. She stops playing once she gets close to the party, but keeps it in her mouth, dangling like a loose cigarette.

"Morning, everyone. Dragon Lord. Lind. Jinnie. Other people." Karie raises her hand towards the two people she hadn't met before, at least she was sure she hadn't. "I don't think we've met. Name's Karie. I'll be your entertainer for this shindig."

Thormanil arrives late, but quickly decides he likes this elf and her confidence. "Dragons come in many flavors. The ones who think themselves beyond defeat make for nice trophies. Others, you can't help but respect. Arx, well, hopefully he 'n I will end up like our Dragonlord and Smaragdea one day. I'm lookin' forward to meeting the goon who nearly calls himself immortal, though."

Eyeing the rest of the party, he stifles a groan as he notices Lind. "I'm Thormanil, by the way, and yeah, this here's Arx. Nice t'meet y'all."

Siercon stood silently in amusement, watching the interaction amongst the heroes, before greeting Lind and the Dragonlord with a "smile". In response to Karie's greeting he responded.

"Greetings; and I look forward to it." Turning to the group, he gave a single nod of his head, as Thormanil spoke, and waited for an answer to Jinnipher's question.

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Yes, being the Dragonlord, I do know what I'm talking about, and I know that some dragons get older with age. And if this dragon is as primal as he claims, we have something of an issue on our hands.

Don't pretend Vorpalis didn't devastate Moone, because he did. And unfortunately, we don't have any magic machine that can disrupt Immortalis's powers. If it comes down to fighting him, I don't know how we'll fare.

Immortalis, simply put, has shown the power to just erase things - towns, cities, maybe even kingdoms. He doesn't just destroy them, he also goes through the painstaking process of erasing their name from the books. Any research we tried to do on him just led to gaping holes in history - like something that was meant to fill that gap simply wasn't there. And I'm not sure about you, but I'm not ready to be cleaned off the record quite yet."

Karie enters the hall, a toy kazoo hanging out of her mouth as she plays a jaunty tune. She stops playing once she gets close to the party, but keeps it in her mouth, dangling like a loose cigarette.

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Hopefully he is just a goon, but what his sons, Lethauros and Vorpalis did within the past year - razed a countryside and a country, respectively - gives us reason to be wary. Heoica defeated both Lethauros and Vorpalis, but their father might be a different beast altogether."

"Good, looks like you're all here.

I'm sure you understand your mission well enough. Immortalis has summoned for representatives of all six houses to meet him in his own realm, Eschaton. Once they're all there, he will judge them, and depending on their judgment... Well, either one of the houses or unions gets the dragon's backing, or he decides that Eubric is too far gone and immolates it. What your mission will be like from there depends greatly on the dragon's verdict.

Any questions? Ready to meet the representatives?"

"I've got a few. Has Immortalis said anything else besides his demands, and where are we to be meeting him?"

"I've stood face-to-face alone in front of Vorpalis. He wasn't a pushover by any stretch.

I don't believe in gods, but Immortalis is as close to one as they come.

Standing in his presence...you couldn't help but feel the sheer power...the majesty..."

"Not really. He told us what he wanted, where he wanted it to go, and said that failure to do this would "reflect badly upon the city". It was perhaps the most cordial threat I've ever been sent.

As for where you'll be taking your little entourage, well..."

The Dragonlord unrolls a map of Eubric.

heroica-mapeubric.jpg

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"See that sector called Way's End? He said go there, leave the city through the west, and just keep walking. Apparently his second in command will find you before you go wandering off too far."

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Nothing we can pin down. If he doesn't want us to know it, we don't, period. If we do know something we shouldn't, he seems perfectly okay with simply smiting you and calling it a day, which is... Concerning, shall we say.

If he turns against Eubric... We'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it."

And I'm not sure about you, but I'm not ready to be cleaned off the record quite yet."

"Doesn't everything get older with age?" Jinnipher rolled her eyes. "The only reason Vorpalis got a hold of my country was because he put fear in the fearful. They were completely defenseless. Even the lowliest human could do that a country with the right choice of words and weapons. Just look at Roland Emeraldo over in Dastan. Just because these things are big, old and can fly means nothing." She looked to the other party members. "You would all do well to remember that."

"As for his power, if he so chooses to show it, I'll be glad to erase that smug toothy grin from his face. All powerful... What nonsense."

"I've stood face-to-face alone in front of Vorpalis. He wasn't a pushover by any stretch.

Standing in his presence...you couldn't help but feel the sheer power...the majesty..."

"He sure looked pathetic when I drove my sword into his skull." She raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you should focus less on admiring them and more on how to kill them. You know, if it comes down to doomsday."

She placed a hand on the pommel of The Beheader, sheathed on her hip. The slender and impossibly sharp blade stretched out behind the elf, like the tail of the one who forged it. It fit her own appearance and demeanor well, or so she liked to think. "Well, let's get moving."

"Get more powerful with age," the Dragonlord corrects himself.

"No, I do not expect him to be all powerful. But without the city in the state it is - so thoroughly divided and caustic - he doesn't need to be."

"We just might."

If he turns against Eubric... We'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it."

"Yes, sir."

The Black Knight straightened up, and saluted. "I'm ready to leave; if anyone wants to borrow any of my gear that I'm not using, just ask."

"As for his power, if he so chooses to show it, I'll be glad to erase that smug toothy grin from his face. All powerful... What nonsense."

"For being an elf, you have no taste."
"He sure looked pathetic when I drove my sword into his skull." She raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you should focus less on admiring them and more on how to kill them. You know, if it comes down to doomsday."

"Doomsday for Eubric, not for the world, Princess."

"I hope you have more success. This time, you won't need to worry about double agents, I hope.

Let me introduce you to who you will be escorting."

The Dragonlord leads the party into a room.

NxiB721.png

Five people and one, tiny worm like creature - although he had grown since the heroes had seen him last! - anxiously made small talk among themselves.

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Heroes, allow me to introduce you to the representatives of the Houses you will be helping. We have Henry Hinckwell..."

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Umbra Shadeaux..."

heroicanpc-umbrashadeaux.jpg

"Bonjour. So it seemz we get to see a dragon today?"

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Geor Bullsworth, from the Bonapartes..."

heroicaquest119-georbullsworth.jpg

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Monalisa Gioconda, representing the Ji Pei's interest..."

heroicaquest15-monalisa.jpg

"Hello, heroes."

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"Patricia Ziegfried, representing the Ziegfrieds..."

"Hello, heroes. It's been a while since I've last met with your organization."

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"And... this yellow critter.... Punii, I think, from the Guild of Invision."

hWCqPuN.png

"Hello *wheeze*, heroes! It's been a while. For the uh, uninitiated, I'm a progg, wormy, lobster-y creatures.

I recognize one of you, but not all of you - and I can't even get a good look at that black misted fellow, for *cough* some reason?"

heroicanpc-dragonlord.jpg

"You will take these folks to Eschaton. You mill make sure no harm comes to them there, and especially make sure no harm comes to them on the way there. Eubric isn't exactly the nicest place to be walking around, with how divided it has become...

You must leave soon. Immortalis awaits you."

"Good morning! I've read about proggs, but I haven't had the honor of meeting one in the flesh before."

Karie sneered at the group of delegates. It'd been awhile since she'd seen Henry Hinckwell and she had no intention of speaking to him again. Her disposition did soften at the sight of Punii.

"Hey, Punii! Long time no see! How's it going?"

Jinnipher sized up each of the ambassadors. "Hmpf, so these are the people who the city's fate depend on. Fine then, let's get going." She paused for a moment. "You, Bullsworth. Maybe you're the only one around here worth asking, what do you plan on saying to this 'high and mighty' dragon?"

"If zis dragon is truly ze "Father of Dragons" he claims, then I will be very impressed. One would think we would've heard of zis dragon beore, but perhaps Olegaia likes keeping secrets...

And it seems zat we already have a fine dragon right here." Umbra pats Arx on the head. "...Thormanil, iz it? You've done good service for ze Shadeaux."

"Heh, well, there's better *wheeze* examples of Proggs out there. Most are horse-sized."

hWCqPuN.png

"Going pretty well! I have a *cough* small burrow near the Hovels I live in - great soil there - and I do work for the Guild *wheeze* of Invision. I'm not sure if they selected me to talk to Immortalis 'cus they know I've *cough* seen some pretty big beasts, or because they don't take him seriously...?

How have you and your husband been doing since the Lonely Island incident? I don't think Masson and I spoke at all on the trip back... He seemed so, uh, listless, I guess.

Also, did I huff too many fumes, or is there a black mist man wearing robes with you guys?"

"You don't mean to tell me that the Bonapartes are aligned with the likes of this pipsqueak?" Jinnipher jabbed her thumb at Lind. "The Tritech aren't much better. In any case, this isn't the time for politicking. I don't think Immortalis can level the whole city just like that, but it is a dragon and he can probably eat you if he so chooses.
