I used to go there for show tapings now and then for the program me and the wife helped in the producing of through our respective college courses. Anyway, I hafta say I'm new and dumb when it comes to an event like this. It's over 4 days, but only one public day? What are the other three days? I'm very interested in this whole scene, man, but I'm a little befuddled as to the actual mechanics of it, as in who is doing what and when and where and for how long. And how involved I get to be. At least I have a few months to figure some of those out. And to design and build something impressive enough to warrant showing off. My cemetery ain't cuttin' it anymore. tedbeard Posted March 10, 2011 It's over 4 days, but only one public day? What are the other three days? Good question. I wondered something similar my first con (BrickCon 2006). The non-public days are time for panel discussions, shopping, silly competitions like build-in-a-bag, blind builds, speed builds, or some crazy challenge like Wacky Racers or Dwarf-tossing machines. There are often Dirty Brickster and draft sessions at some point and hopefully some sort of keynote from a LEGO employee or other "celebrity". Oh, and lets not forget the hours of building to get the displays ready. I know some cons are more about individual builds but at BrickCon it is all about the cooperative displays. I have participated in the Castle display every year and we are always building landscaping and populating the display with battling armies, farmers, animals, ents, dragons whatever right up to the moment the public walks in. Since this is a new Con it may or may not have the bigger cooperative displays but there is usually lots to do especially if your MOC gets damaged in transit or you didn't quite get it finished before leaving. blueandwhite Posted March 11, 2011 Jeff, I'm glad to see that there will be an event in Toronto this year despite BricksNorth being cancelled. Travelling across the border with my collection has always been a worry for me so hearing about this festival is great news. What I'd like to know is how many attendees can we expect? Obviously this is going to be a smaller festival, but is there a limit on how many people can register? Obviously space is limited so I thought I'd ask as it doesn't seem to be mentioned on the Brickfête website. The reason I'm asking is that large MOCs obviously take up a considerable amount of space and I'm wondering if there might be a space shortage if too many folks register. Thursday mid - late afternoon: Registration, Setting up your Mocs and Mingling with others Friday morning to late Afternoon: Registration, Setting up your Mocs and Mingling with others Friday evening - hanging out and fun stuff Saturday during the day - Public Hours Saturday evening - hanging out and fun stuff Sunday Morning - Early afternoon: hanging out and fun stuff Sunday Afternoon: Take down and say goodbyes :( A specific schedule will go live at a later date. Hey there, just to add to what Jeff said, (our actual schedule of events with all the activities explained will be out in a few weeks) but for now, I can give you a few ideas of things you can expect... Thursday night is definitely designed for loading in and setting up, and friday morning will be similar, but at a more leisurely pace. Its also a time to see what everyone else is bringing out for display. Catching up with old friends, and meeting new ones and checking out the vendors before the public comes in the next day and buys them out. Hopefully everyone has arrived and set up by late friday afternoon. Our opening ceremonies will be friday evening. During the weekend there will be 2 Mindstorms Challenges, different impromptu activities and games with prizes to be won. There also will be collaborative builds and head to head competitions and if we are lucky a special guest speaker or two. Each hour of the schedule will be filled with something to either watch, participate in or do. The more you participate, the more fun you will have and the more AFOL friends you will get to know. Janey Red Brick Posted March 13, 2011 Even many of the largest of events have the rule "first registered, first served". The Assembly Hall is a beautiful building and we have the entire use of it. We are prepared for a number of people having large displays, we are also keeping a close eye on our vendor vrs display ratio, and our activities and event needs, as well as leaving room public visitors. Its a fine balancing act for any fest, and this being our first, we are treading slowly and carefully. We look forward to meeting new friends, and seeing the things they have created. I'll be in the Arts and Architecture section, look for the chinese guy swooshing ships and pew pew pewing my architectural stuff. How do we tell who is you? Obviously they'd be the pink pony. You know what, I don’t even think I know who Dr. Spock is haha. It should be fairly simple to find it us, if you’re going to see all the MOCs, you’ll probably end up seeing virtually everyone – worse case we should all have name tags – so just ask for ‘Simon’ And to make it super duper easy I’ll wear my bright red cobra tshirt.
