This is your chance to help my friends and me with a school project. Our subject is youth and education, and we have decided to focus on people who gets forced in to a specific education, and people wo have had parents and/or friends who had big expectations for you in your education.

As not all of our questions are in the poll, I would like you to answer them in your reply.

Here are the questions:

In which country do you live?

Which education did you choose? Why?

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

Did the above somehow affected your education?

If you have any interresting stories related to this, please post them.

Thanks for your help

Christian

The problems with these questions are at what point can someone be forced?

I NEVER liked going to school. But I wasn't FORCED to take subjects I hated.

But I was FORCED to attend, or I'd have my big behind kicked.

Also I think Children often don't realise the importance of the education they're having. I wish I'd worked harder at school.

So more detailled answer for me is:

England UK (I study at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh, Scotland at the moment)

When GCSE subject choices came up circa 14/15, I chose my own. Same with A-Level subjects at 16. And the same with my degree choices.

SO my parents made me go to school, but the direction I took was my own.

As for "friends" I went to a Private School and it was competative. I was made to feel bad for getting crappy marks. But the irony was I couldn't be bothered to work, but go upset when I did badly. Kids are stupid.

Need anymore dude, just PM me.

In which country do you live?

I live in Denmark

Which education did you choose? Why?

I choose to be educated as a teacher. Originally I wanted to be a "gymnasium" teacher, but I didn't like university much, so I changed and enrolled at a Teacher's Seminarium. 4 years later I became a public school teacher.

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

No the only enforcement laid upon me was that my parents were getting anxious that I might never get an education, since I worked as a proffesional soldier for a few years.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

My parents had none - or close to none. They just wanted me to get an education be that streetsweeper or university grade. At least that's what they said :|

Did the above somehow affected your education?

Yeah! I guess

In which country do you live?

Germany

Which education did you choose? Why?

In Germany it was the "Gymnasium" which is most difficult form of school (5th to 13th grade).

I'm not sure if this important here, but since it is also "education" I will add it: I am studying mechanical engeneering on the RWTH Aachen, before I studied two semesters of material sciences, but this was too chemical for me ;)

My current course is not my 100% favourite one, but it was the best choice I had when changing the courses.

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

Nope.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

Nothing particular. They sure wanted me to solve everything as good as possible, but as long as my results were at least good enough to go to the next class / get my diploma there was no pressure at me...

Did the above somehow affected your education?

Nope.

Hope this helps ;)

Here are the questions:

In which country do you live? USA

Which education did you choose? Why? I am still choosing. I will be attending university now six years after finishing the 12th grade. My plan is to get a major in secondary education and a minor in business. I waited because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do and then for a while could not afford to go.

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it? No, most of my family is not educated beyond 12th grade.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades? I was expected to pass and get above C grades. Everyone knew I could get straight A's but I did not want to.

Did the above somehow affected your education? Possibly, if my family or friends had pushed me to be more competitive, I would have finished at the university by now. Whether I would have a good job or could use that education is a different matter.

In which country do you live?

Netherlands

Which education did you choose? Why?

VWO, which is the highest possible. Why? Well, why should I do something which is beneath my capablitites? ;)

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

Well, they expected me to graduate within the 6 years it normally takes. Which actually worked out too.

Did the above somehow affected your education?

Nope :)

In which country do you live?

Germany

Which education did you choose? Why?

Studying classics(ancient history), classic archaeology and philosophy on MA (Master of Arts/Magister). Determined to promovate.

My wish is to either teach at university or work for museum(s).

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

Noone forced me. Though I was inspired by my former history teachers from high school to study history.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

My family is mostly indifferent though expect me to do well. Since I'm known to score good concerning grades noone asks anyway.

Did the above somehow affected your education?

I feel justified by the mentioned indifference. Since I will be the first academic in the family in supposedly 4+ generations.

In which country do you live?

United States

Which education did you choose? Why?

I chose to go for an Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences degree because it interested me. This degree offers a lot of different pathways, like musuem work and teaching.

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

No. I chose to do this on my own.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

Did the above somehow affected your education?

My original intent was to take a year off inbetween Community college/High School (I did both at the same time) and my next step. Everyone thought I wouldn't go back, but I did. Then, I was expected to make decent grades, which I did. The attitudes originally made me more defiant and determined to go back to school, but then those later turned into support of what I was doing.

In which country do you live?

I live in Canada

Which education did you choose, why?

I have mostly been into building and making things hands on, right now at high school I'm taking as many tech classes as possible. Some of those include: Construction tech, grade 9 integrated tech (you do a bit of everything in that class), computer tech (animations all things alike) and In grade 10 I will probably take auto-body tech (cars) and a few others, I cant think of any right now though.

Did someone force you to take this education?

No, my parents have not forced me to take any education I don't like, they have said many times they support me in whatever I choose, I may join the Canadian reserves because I have always been into the military and technologies within it, which my parents also support me in.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

I don't think my friends or family have expectations that I get the highest grades possible as long as I do as good as I can in each of my classes. I also feel they don't have huge expectations about my education as long as I enjoy what I am doing.

Did the above somehow affected your education?

I don't really think the above has effected my education because I am not very late into my education if you consider going to College or University.

Hope that helped Christian

I chose my education for myself. I had the same education in school like Apo. (hmm...not really the same... yes, I was at a gymnasium, too, but 1st it was only for girls and 2nd the stuff we have to learn here in the gymnasium is very different.

You just realize how different it is when you start to study and get to know other students who had other education specification.

Now I study pharmacie and the school stuff I learned is soo few you need for the education at university....

Well, I agree that most people are forced to have SOME level/kind of education, but I actually enjoyed it to an extent. I knew the profession I wanted, so I took the required/related classes. To a degree they're my choice, but they're also not (as I had to take them to be what I want to).

I'm currently 20 years old, and live in the United States. I attend the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore/Maryland. I'm pre-med, and my mother actually discouraged me from being one (but I'm stubborn ;) ) Grades were always expected to be high, but that didn't really affect me. I went through highschool without working at all, however as soon as I reached college...WOW. Talk about a difference. I study pretty much all day when I'm there, and it's still hard to do well. No wonder my school has the third highest suicide rate in the US :'( I...still need to refine my study habbits >_>

Is this for Intel, by chance?

In which country do you live?

France

Which education did you choose? Why?

I studied international management because I think the world is a small place and it is important to me to know about different cultures. I then did postgraduate studies in Supply Chain management at the ESSEC school of business (top school in France). I choose supply chain management because it is challenging and I really like the way you can move things all around the globe *satis*

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

Nobody did but myself.

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

They are happy when I have good grades. I think they always kinda forced me to have good grades since they know I have the capacity to get some. When I somehow get bad grades but I did my best, they usually were really nice.

In which country do you live?

United States of Idiot America

Which education did you choose? Why?

I'm choosing to go to one of the only all "Gifted/AP" High Schools in Florida because I believe even there I won't be challenged because Florida is the 47th highest state in terms of Standards in Education.

Did someone force you to take this education? If yes, who did it?

No, no one forced me. I'm going there because I'm bored with regular education, I mean...how am I supposed to be challenged by something I learned in third grade, dammit

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

Well...my friends don't really give a megablock and my family just wants to me to graduate highschool and go through at least a few years of college and they expect me to get all A's seeing as the subject matter is below me

Did the above somehow affected your education?

Nope, not at all possible.

No, I think that is illegal...

What expectations did your friends and/or family have about your education? About grades?

That is works fine. Highest score would be nice, but they are satisfied with simply good grades.

In which country do you live?

Canada

What Education did you Choose? Why?

Originally, I took an undergraduate degree in Fine Art & Art History, intent on pursuing a career in either illustration or animation. Unfortunately, things didn't work out that way. Finding work as an illustrator can be daunting, so I decided to shift gears. After finishing University, I went on to Law School where I finished my Law Degree. I have since written the Bar, however I have yet to be called as I haven't completed my articles (necessary in my jurisdiction to become a practising Barister or Solicitor). Sadly, my Law degree has provided me with nothing in the way of employment. I have struggled to find work over this past year.

Did someone force you to take this education?

My choices, good or bad were mine to make. My family has been very supportive in my educational pursuits.

What expectations did your family/friends have about your education/grades?

Quite honestly, the aforementioned persons (whether they be family or friend) only expect me to put forward my best effort. For the most part, I have been quite successful academically. I have achieved reasonable success in my undergraduate studies in Art, as well as Law. Needless to say, academic success does not always translate into career success.

Did any of the preceding questions affect your education?

No.

Hope this helps.

Later.
