This dock, originally conceived as a background for my frigate is now becoming bigger and bigger. I now name it

This is really good. I have been wanting to build a dock for some time but just haven't had any good ideas... but this is a good one.

That building... *wub* *wub* *wub*

I remember the original and liked the raised dock then but now with the new building and the uniformity of colour not to mention the period architecture I'm really impressed. Perhaps you can impose a photo of that against some background scenery to set it's scene. It's a beautiful dock and really needs a specialised gallery.

Thank you all for the positive comments :-)

The new building is based on Rochefort's rope factory so I guess it really suits the period very well. I'm pleased with it, it took me two days (not full time) to design, with the windows etc.

As for adding a town behind it's out of the question as this dock serves as a background for my frigate and is meant to be placed against a wall on a furniture. That's why there are only halves of buildings (and also because it needs less parts this way.) But this is a work in progress and I'll certainely add some new things.

Some more photos (on these ones the camera flash makes my bricks less white than they really are but that is still ugly) :

dock gallery (may not be viewable yet)

Unfortunately the camera flash hides the details, (but also makes my bricks look whiter lol).

Yes, this is ever so annoying.

But you have some options:

  • Add additional lighting which isn't as always as easy as should be
  • Take the MOC outside on a sunny day - of course your MOC might not be easily relocated.
  • Adjust the image in photo editing software which of course can be time consuming getting it just right

Or just not worry about it! Chances are close-up pictures sufficiently will reveal the detail.

Great dock so far Mr. gui *y*

It seems to be so much more than a background for another ship X-D

I too would like to see a pic of the back side of the dock :-)

Here be some thumb links of all the pics of Mr. Gui's dock:

I'll take new photos when I get some new parts (doors notably).

As for the backside there's not much to see, it's made of red bricks (because i don't have enough white bricks) and the buildings are empty.

Oh that it is... I just wanted to bring this wonderful MOC to your attention.

Marvellous work Phred!

What kind of doors you thinking about adding? Just the brown ones that are curved at the top?

Hey Mr. Gui45,

Just out of curiosity, are you the builder of this MOC?

If so, what's its status?

I really love this gui. Especially the supplies office, it is beautiful *wub* . Your brick technique is very cool. Did you mix tan and white or is some of the white just discolored. Either way, the effect is awesome. The only thing about this I don't like is the powder magazine (that's the house far right, correct?) seems out of scale compared to the supplies office. I'm fully aware buildings are different sizes IRL, but something about this feels particularly out of scale with the detailed office next to it. The warehouse and powder magazine are both very nice, regardless. It is such a nice touch to the whole scene!

I also like the way you built the harbor wall, simple yet effective. What's the next step? I would love to see rows of buildings running back from the supplies office face perpendicular to it, like the office and magazine are at ends of rows of other buildings or a market. Is this a possibility? Either way, it's an awesome creation. Thanks for sharing! *wub* *wub* *wub*

@ Mister Phes : I plan to add brown 1x4x8 curved doors, they will fit the building the best for the size, and as they also only exist in brown I don't have the choice for the color, but it will suit the colors of the barrels etc. so I don't think it will look odd. As for the powder magazine it will be a standard city white door (the old model).

@Phred : Yes it's my fort (this Brickshelf page is entirely mine) I consider it as finished, it may lack colors but I don't dare alter it and I also like realism.

@Hinckley : About the colors it is not on purpose, that's just many of my white bricks are discolored and that is accentuated (or softened for the first pic) by the camera flash. Personally I don't like that.

But I don't think the powder magazine is really out of scale. A powder magazine is meant to be solid and not high and its size is proportionnal to the other building which if it was a real building and not lego world scale would be at least say 7 windows long. But I can understand your comment and it could be nice to have only high buildings designed like the supplies office. In fact we have to take it like an arsenal more than a harbor.

This works perfect for a background *wub*

It has lots of potential for being expanded to became a larger dock.

The length is already Ok, all it need is some depth and this could become a marvelous little harbor or city.

Brick-yellowing is a universal problem, we all have yellowed bricks. In this case it is still acceptable.

You most certainly are a talented builder and I'm anxious to see more work from you!

Spray paint makes things different colours X-D

I agree. If the bricks were all white then the harbor would look too clean and perfect, the yellowing gives a sense of aging.

When I saw this topic I ignored it as I pictured a long featureless dock.... :-$ Silly me! This is beautiful and it really captures the theme. I'm not sure if you want to hear this, but IMHO the yellowed bricks make it look better! It's really good to see a high dock and I love those ladders. The tiled brick effect on the main building work vey well. I want more! I think if you extend it more you should go deeper, not wider.

Personally, I disagree! ;-) I think the yellowing makes this!! It looks really great with that different shade in there. It makes the buildings look like they've been aged by salt water in the air. It truly gives it such a great feel.

I think the style is fine, but would like to see each story a brick higher...but like I said I don't think the first floor of each should be the same height. There is no standard floor height in real life...but maybe it is the beautiful windows you have constructed in comparison with the cheesy LEGO wall piece arch windows. I love those pieces, but your window construction is so much cooler!

Yes silly you :-P But that does highlight the importance of a catchy thread title. I shall attempt to make amends.

Nice work guy ! I definitly like the use of black and white only, it gives your creation a clean and realistic look. I hope you're planning on extending the harbour with other buildings.
