Mister Phes Posted July 23, 2006 I'm stumped too. My creature building experience is completely not existent however I am curious how someone would go about making an "organic" Kraken. I.e. one that doesn't look too mechanical or robotic. Mr Tiber what pieces do you have available to you?
ghoulrealm Posted July 23, 2006 Do you have a picture of the kraken in question? There are several different versions of this creature. Some are more octopus like, others are squid like while others are completely unique. The only thing in common with them all is tentacles here are some examples lord of the rings watcher mosasaurus head one with humanoid features just the tentacles nautiliod like octopus like and Architeuthis I assume you want something out of "Dead Mans Chest," but I haven't seen it nor can I find any kraken pics from that movie. oo7 Posted July 23, 2006 I assume you want something out of "Dead Mans Chest," but I haven't seen it nor can I find any kraken pics from that movie. In the movie the only glimpse of the kraken is the tentacles and a mouth. Here's a cruddy pic of a MOC I made with my HMS Joe Vig, this was before I was aware of the kraken's presence in Dead Man's Chest, before the discussion in the History and Adventure Viking prototypes thread, before ghoulrealm made his MOC and before the I saw the NCLUG pirates display. the backside
Mister Phes Posted July 24, 2006 I like this one the best because it escapes the "robotic" look, but runner up would be just the tentacles...
Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn Posted July 24, 2006 OK, so, if you want to build, basically, a giant squid.... The one Phes put there is definetly the best. If you want the Kraken from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest, You simply cant build the whole thing. Rather, each tentacle would have to be built up out of blocks with spinning thingys and connector joints for full articulation, and the head would be QUITE a trick, involving about 500 more connector joints for the full, giant, roundy-toothed mouth thing. Yeah. - Helden
Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn Posted July 24, 2006 Just make sure you've got plenty of flying bricks, preferrably thin ones. Those ships splintered awfully bad. - Helden
jmenomeno Posted July 24, 2006 Mr Tiber what pieces do you have available to you? Hehe , I think a haven't got any pieces which are suited for kraken building, but in this cases, bricklink helps me out :-) I'm an planning to make a comic or a small movie about a ship and a kraken, so i think I only need tentacles and a lot of teeths for the mouth, I think that's not very difficult to do(the most difficult part will be breaking the ship :'-( ). In building my Kraken model, I figured the best approach was to *not* show more than was necessary. The unknown is a lot scarier than the known. In terms of building, I built up the water around the tentacles to hide the joints. Tentacles could be built from click hinges linked together (but they would be pretty thin) Another approach would be to thread 1x1 round bricks with flex tube - graceful curves can be done that way, and you can make larger tentacles with 2x2 round bricks. Teeth? Viking horns. Putthem on clips or in the Technic bricks in the studs. The 1x1 plate with tooth is another idea. The problem with the Kraken is that it is a mostly boneless thing, and LEGO is tough to model. Joe
Mister Phes Posted July 25, 2006 Do you have pictures of your Kraken, Mr Jmenomeno? Or isn't your beastie ready to be seen yet? When it is by all means share it with us in a new thread.
SuvieD Posted July 25, 2006 Black tenticle parts on bricklink are very cheap. Usually around $0.02-0.05 a piece. You should look at getting some. I didn't know squid had teeth. Oh and Phes, Joe's was seen in his Pirate of the Carribean moc.

Oh and Phes, Joe's was seen in his Pirate of the Carribean moc. You're right - squid don't have teeth, They have a beak. He has one. The Kraken has teeth, like the Sarlacc...but I hadn't seen the movie when I was building so I went for the hidden look: Joe
oo7 Posted July 25, 2006 I didn't know squid had teeth. They don't, but this is not a squid, it's a kraken. Oh and Phes, Joe's was seen in his Pirate of the Carribean moc. yeah, but chanches are most people be too lazy to find it so here it his and minaturized
Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn Posted July 25, 2006 Wiki to the Rescue! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraken Basically, it just depends on what kind of Kraken you want. Small, octopus kind? http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=164542 Or huge, Dead Mans Chest kind? If you want DMC kind, you'd need something far larger then those black tenticles :P
ghoulrealm Posted July 25, 2006 I just thought I'ld mention that squid have both a beak and chitonous teeth on a tongue like structure called a radula. and most even have teeth like hooks on their sucker rings. Also note that the tentacles are really called arms. The 2 true tentacles, and only in cuttlefish and squid, are the long grasping limbs. The difference is commonly enterchangable, but if you want to be more accurate... Moluscs are the coolest *y* and some are tastey too!
ghoulrealm Posted July 26, 2006 May I ask you how this beastie is called.... Those are anatomical details of real squid. most of the suckers are concentrated on the clubs.
ghoulrealm Posted July 26, 2006 Whether or not to include teeth if you make an anatomically correct squid based kraken.
ghoulrealm Posted July 26, 2006 I realise that, and thats cool, but I felt it may be usefull to others and hopefully inspire some more beast mocs from others. Using movies for inspiration is great and I don't have any objections againts it, but don't limit your mocs to hollywood versions. I try to use anatomical realism at least in form if not size, but it need not be limted to existing creatures either. I geuss my point is that it should be as realistic as possible, at least in morphology, as lego can get. that is if you have access to a good lego inventory. El Bucanero Posted July 26, 2006 Yes you're right, we shouldn't limit our MOCs on hollywood versions, however the DMC kraken comes quite close to the norse mythology version and that is the origin of the kraken. However you was quite useful mr Ghoulrealm
