The Western Rip Off (1996)

Recommended Posts

I remember the sets as I'm a proud owner of the western collection :D

About the movie, I haven't a clue of what is it...

Not 100% sure where it came from but i had this as a screen saver back in the day. Believe it was aquired from lego.com.

Stop motion sure has changed over the years.

Interesting watch. I've never seen that before.

Given the year and quality of experience, I'm guessing a super-mega-hyper-interactive CD-ROM!

(ridiculous overenthusiastic reply only provided to match the hype of the era)

I'm afraid that this is the first time that I've seen this, but thank you very much for bringing this to all of our attentions!

This commercial is especially worth noting in that it features no less than three undiscovered "official" combinations of minifigures for the Western theme! I've assembled a list of them by part, with placeholder names:

Clumsy Bandit:

This is an interesting head choice, as it was always(until now) thought of as only having been used for "good guys",

The photo makes it look brown, but the video clearly shows that it's actually Black:

It was hard to determine between this and the Cowboy Red Shirt piece, but the front view at 0:33 suggests that it's this one:

http://www.bricklink...em.asp?P=970c00 - Black

Skull Bandit:

I'm guessing that the rather unique use of the classic skull piece is to suggest a mask? I hope?

Stagecoach Driver II:

It's surprisingly poor animation, even for back then. LEGO was capable of some very high quality animation for commercials. There was an even better example, that I can't find, but here's an example of what they could do:

Even so, it's a lovely find, and many thanks for sharing it!

EDIT: It looks like we won't be seeing too much animation from LEGO unless it's in a movie. It turns out it's illegal to show toy sets that require construction assembling without showing a pair of hands(scroll down to the bottom).

You're right! You can still download this screensaver here -> http://www.ultimatesavers.com/index.asp?ID=253

Last night, I installed it in a virtual machine and recorded it with Quicktime.

It's from a screensaver, and the entire file is about 1MB. I think it's pretty impressive for the file size.

That's incredibly stupid. I can't believe that at some point, someone actually thought it would be a good idea to create that law.

I agree it is ridiculous. It was probably created in response to a lawsuit because someone bought a set and it didn't magically build itself. I'm not joking. Ever read any of the negative reviews on Amazon? Pick anything, not just LEGO products.
