As noticed by Stark Mark 5, the latest update to LDD has been released. Don't know yet what's new, or even what the version number is (haven't downloaded yet myself).

Update: version is 4.1.8, so seems like a very minor update.

Anyway, talk about it all here :classic:

Cool... now some of the old platform (4560/4561) / harbour models can be completed. The old technic steering wheel is a nice inclusion for the older LXF models. The Technic Fibre-Optic part is there; and the <insert that tiresome argument> Cockpits which I used in the 7939 Homage...

I wonder if this is an indication of some (older) pieces returning in future models?

Ooh, exciting. I can already see a bunch of bits I really wanted, like the rope bridge, mummies coffin and different sized cart wheels. Time to revisit a bunch of sets I've done previously I think.

It's a bit weird that the mummies coffin lid doesn't connect on top of the coffin, though thankfully it's very easy to scaffold that into place.

Observations I've made so far:

  • A lot of BIONICLE and Hero Factory parts have been moved to the Hero Factory parts category (with the picture of the 5M shell). Many were previously in the category with the picture of the steering wheel, making things extremely inconvenient at times.
  • Other Hero Factory and BIONICLE parts have been moved to the other Hero Factory parts category (with the picture of the 5M bone). This includes many joint pieces like hands and feet which were previously in the Technic category (with the picture of the 2M pin/axle).
  • The categories previously marked with question marks have been removed, so hopefully the miscellaneous parts in them have been moved to the appropriate categories.
  • Many minifigure accessories have been moved out of the minifigure accessories category (with the picture of the lever) and into the minifigure parts category (with the picture of a minifigure). I don't exactly understand the logistics behind this change. Most of the things that got moved were weapons and tools; other parts like plant and animal parts have remained in the accessories category.
  • Many axle pieces have been moved from the Modified Plates category to the Wheels category.
  • Haven't done a thorough check of errors fixed, but there are at least a few major ones that haven't been. The Aquasharks helmet 6089 still does not fit on a minifigure, and a skeleton with the head of General Nuckal (93064) still cannot wear the typical Ninjago skeleton armor (93056).

I'm sure I'll observe more things about the new update as I use it. I'm very grateful for this update and didn't expect it so soon!

Interesting parts added! I see a lot I could have used in my latest moc, alas, I'll have to add what I can now

baseplate 48x48 has been added I think. I don't remember it being in the last one :look:

Some category moves make a lot of sense...others, like the mini-fig category make things messy. Don't know how I feel about tiles in the modified plates section.

Obvious oddity:

That piece sir, does not belong

I've got problems downloading, both in LDD and outside LDD. Other (OS) updates work fine... Did others also experience problems?

[update:]

Turned out there was still an old LDD.pkg in my downloads folder. Removing that causes the software to work again :) b.t.w was annoying, downloaded for 99.9% and then broke down.

Nice! I do wonder why they added what appears to be the UCS X-wing's canopy. Downloading now...

No, I don't think so. In last years interview with the LDD Manager (not the SW ), he said that they would add old parts as time allows, so I guess it's part of the plan.

I'll have to try that. Mine got to that same point and then said that LDD couldn't access the server. And it wasn't an Internet connection problem, because I was downloading something else at the same time that downloaded just fine.

I don't mind update's

but it's getting pretty annoying that after every update you have to redo the unlocking of what is now called LDDExtended

My installation keeps LDD Extended unlocked...

It depends on whether you edit the preferences file in "Program Files" or the one in "Documents and Settings". The preferences file in "Program Files" gets replaced every time LDD updates, so it won't keep your settings. The one in "Documents and Settings" is user-specific and will keep LDD Extended unlocked even when LDD is updated. I had difficulty with this myself, early on.

You are right, I didn't thought about the other preferences.ini file!

But, if I'm not wrong, the guide to enable universe/extended modes tells clearly to use the file inside the user folder, and not the global one (that I think has been created for a different use).

I suppose so, but that didn't stop me from using the wrong file when I first unlocked Universe mode.

I'm still having trouble downloading. I get down to about 2kb left in the download and then LDD says it can't access the server to download the file. Anyone else still having this problem? I did try removing any past LDD downloads from the Downloads folder, as was suggested. I'm running LDD on Mac OS X 10.6.8, if that helps.

It seems to me that until you can do something as simple as combine chain links around gears and tracks around sprockets, LDD cannot be taken seriously as a day-to-day design tool. And it seems that rather than add that functionality, the solution the developers have taken is to remove the geometry from the application (i.e. 3711).

It does not start on Windows XP SP3.

It logs following error:

ThreadID: 1432 Fac: 39196574788 Value: 8 Severity: errSeverityError Type: errTypeApplication Ident: 541869124 Handled: false Description: An error has occurred while launching LDD.

See the read me file for help, or go to http://ldd.lego.com/support/

The version 3.1.3 was working, the 4.1.7 was never installed on that computer.

It works without problems on Windows 7 64bit.

Do you have any experience with 4.1.8 on Windows XP?

XP; SP3 works fine... just the few removed pieces are a bit annoying.

You might need to update some of your graphics drivers; or change the default graphics settings (to low). Next time; try to copy out the crash report.

Thank you to all of you, I finally managed to find the reason of the problem.

I noticed that db.lif file has 0 bytes. LDD could not create it during first startup, because it is created in the user profile directory and file was too big.

Actually LDD did not provided any usefull information, only messagebox with message as I have written:

An error has occurred while launching LDD.

See the read me file for help, or go to http://ldd.lego.com/support/

And then it ended.

But after fixing profile space problem, it works without problems.
