I assume there won't be much left

This is an incredible model.

I would like to know whether he uses software to convert a 3D model into a LEGO model before building.

I'd take a guess that even his leftovers would amount to more than most of us can claim to own :sweet:

As to the software, are there packages out there that will do that kind of conversion? I can imagine something could "pixelate" a 3D model, which would be a good start to getting the scaling and stud counts pretty accurate. I'm not familiar with a package that actually does this though.

I guess there are many. It's basically the simplest form of "voxelization" (There's an algorithm for that called "marching cube"), I guess there are plugins for LDraw (like 2D mosaics)

The model itself is awesome and all, but I honestly don't get the hype around this model. A Lego car that can't even roll? A Lego car that uses bricks in the age of sloped and smooth parts? And The Lego Car Blog says it's the most awesome Lego car ever? There's simply nothing Lego in this model.

I'm speechless.

To those outside of the AFOL community this car is what LEGO is all about. The general population don't think of Power Functions, SNOT etc when thinking of Lego. They think of little cuboids stacked on top of one another, and this car does that better than anything I've ever seen : )

looks cool, probably not the most comfortable ride though ,

just combine that body with this engine and chassis and you would have a real car.
