AFOLCON & The LEGOShow

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't mind; I've yet to book a room, and I don't know which hotels are near the venue. But just as long as you don't snore!

While I'm here: it's a shame Cecilie won't be there this year, she and her crew ill be missed.

Hehe.. Well.. I do snore. But he said I didn't snore so loud that he woke up. hehe..

The AFOLCON website has recommended hotel information including details of preferential rates. The (Premier Inn) hotels nearest to the event centre are not being used by the event organisers.

I will be going....

But which day of the lego show will be best, will all the displays be there saturday to monday or will some arrive half way thru and some go home on Sunday with the makers? (Ive been at car shows and it always changes each day and even thru out a day as people come and go).

Will there be planed activities or giveaways, award giving to moc's. special bricks on 1st come 1st served, on any day's. a lot of events are better on a sunday but sunday is the worst day for me, tho may still go, also will there be variations if I do get a weekend pass, to make it worth going sunday afternoon for a bit, will be going for at least one day as only 45mins from my house,

Also is there anything we can do, i havent got time to build anything really, but have lots of lego !!!!

I plan to be there for the entire weekend although I suspect Monday might be the riskiest from a MOC disappearing act perspective. That being said, the larger MOCs such as those the size of St Pancreas or Westminster Abbey (two of last year's exhibits) can hardly be moved before the official close of business. One improvement this year is that exhibitors can display free of charge without attending AFOLCON and they will be given time to set-up on Friday night meaning that most stuff should be in place when doors open to the public on Saturday.

As regards the 'first come, first served' aspect I suppose from a shopping perspective it might be better to arrive on Saturday rather than Monday. Some stuff may be more in demand! Last time around the Lego Show tickets were staggered so that crowds were spread evenly throughout the day rather than having 80% of the day's attendees arrive at peak time. There might be different arrangements this year given the venue change (it can handle much bigger crowds) and for those with weekend passes but I'm sure the organisers could clarify this for you.

Well me and the family are booked for saturday and my brother-in-law should be there with his tribe too, so 9 of us altogether. :D

(Edited because I cant count: 2 family tickets and an 7 month old actually equals 9 not 8, I wouldnt mind but the 7 month old is mine!!)

I'm so glad you said that! I can't imagine handing that over to a courier - I'm not sure they'd understand the importance of being gentle with it!

We did acutally hand it over to a courier to get it home again as we ran out of space in the van! It survived amazingly well considering, although it wouldn't be our preferred way of transporting it :-)

I will almost certainly not have the use of a car for AFOLCON. Public transport to the centre itself seems to be easy enough, are there also regular buses to the recommended hotels?

Also, unrelated to transport; do you guys do anything in the evening? I've been to a few anime conventions and they tend to have a lot of socialising in the evenings, do you do trips to the pub or anything similar?

There are regular buses from the recommended hotels, which are all very close to each other, to the Trafford Centre, it's about a 12 minute journey.

There are evening events being planned; details will be coming out shortly :-)

The AFOLCON website has recommended hotel information including details of preferential rates. The (Premier Inn) hotels nearest to the event centre are not being used by the event organisers.

Sadly none of the Premier Inns were prepared to give us any sort of a deal on room for attendees, we did try :-) Also none of them have function spaces that we could use for evening activities & socialising.

I will be going....

As far as possible all the displays will be there for the whole event, Saturday through to Monday. Certainly all the major/large displays will be . There may be specific circumstances where a disply can't be there for the whole event, but these would only ever be smaller displays and only in rare circumstances.

There will be planned activities, watch the twitter accounts for information @AFOLCON & @LEGOSHOW

There will not be award-giving to mocs; this is not a competitive display event. However, there may well be some friendly competitions as part of the evening social activities :-)

There are no special bricks for LEGOSHOW-only attendees. Although, as someone has already mentioned, the various shops and vendors may have stock which will disappear faster than others.

If you are not registered to display a moc, please don't bring your own lego with you: we cannot guarantee that it won't get mixed up with someone else and can absolutely guarantee that there won't be anywhere to display it :-) There will be activities during the LEGOSHOW which any attendee can take part in.

Hope that helps to answer some questions. Sorry for the delay.

Not too late at all, the more the merrier!

As well as the chance to meet'n'talk with other AFOLs & display your mocs, you can...

...shop to your heart's content - or at least your wallet's limit ;-) - from our variety of vendors...

...listen to the talks from industry-experts...

...join in the free after-hours visit to the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, exclusively for AFOLCON attendees, see the AFOLCON website Agenda tab for details on this...

...take part in the activities planned for during the LEGOSHOW weekend, details to be published soon...

...join in the evening social activities for AFOLCON attendees, again details to be published soon...

...and if you've had enough LEGO (I know. You can never have enough right? But just maybe you'll want a break from it all) you can head into the Trafford Centre for shopping/entertainment/food etc or into Manchester town centre itself.

It looks like again I can't register because of exams and money :sceptic: . But I'll still come in on one day, I loved it last year!

I thought Manchester was a city?

Do we have to pay any extra to join any of the activities above?

Shopping - is on your own dime, naturally :)

Activities during the LEGOSHOW - Building workshops run by Bright Bricks are chargeable, whilst the one by LEGOLAND Discovery Centre are free. Details of both of these are on the LEGOSHOW website, under Things to See, Building Workshops.

Evening social activities - There won't be any additional charges for any of the activities, but all meals and drinks are on your own dime.

the free after-hours visit to the LDC and the talks from industry experts are for full AFOLCON attendees.

I'm coming up, and really looking forward to it! I'm not long out of my Dark Age so I hope this is a really fun and worthwhile experience.

If you are displaying MOCs, do you need to stay with them or is it safe to wander round and enjoy everything?

Are the opening hours to the public known yet? i.e. opening and closing times over the weekend

End of questions for now.

If you're displaying MOCs, yes you need to stay with them for Saturday through Monday. However, there will of course be lunch and other breaks where you can swap out with others and volunteers.

You can wander to your heart's content on Thursday & Friday to chat with others and see everything - that is one of the major ideas behind AFOLCON.

Public opening hours are 10am - 5pm Saturday through Monday. Details, as always, are on the LEGOSHOW website.

And we've just announced that we are attempting to break the World Record for the largest LEGO mosaic: http://www.thelegoshow.com/world-record-mosaic :classic:

"The LEGO® Show, the largest in the UK, is aiming to make a 143m2 image containing approximately 550,000 LEGO® bricks. To complete the mosaic, the show organisers will need at least 2,000 members of the public to help by building a mosaic square, giving visitors the unique chance to be part of an official world record.

The record, officially entitled ‘the largest image built with interlocking plastic bricks’, currently stands at 112m2, and was made by DK Publishing House (UK) in London, UK in 2010."

Sandpits? Err... no, not something we tend to provide!

You're welcome to bring some with you, as long as it's contained and doesn't make a mess. But why use sand? You could dig up technic pins or 1x1 round plates instead!

Is that correct?

The Danish LUG Byggepladen found out that it were only 97,5m2.

Hi,

The DK one was the most up to date information from the World Record website when we did the announcement, but Guinness have been updating their website and it is now listed as 137.5m2 from a build in Germany: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/1000/largest-image-built-with-interlocking-plastic-bricks

Ours will be the new World Record once it's complete :sweet:

I just booked the hotel for two nights. Together with a friend I am driving over on Friday evening to visit the show on Saturday.

And we're driving back on Sunday. The plan is to visit Legoland Windsor on the way back.
