I remember being really excited about this set before I owned it, probably because it looked really interesting in the yearly LEGO catalogues. Problem was the price tag was creeping up near $30 of the local currency which is quite expensive for something this size, and even more expensive back in the early 90's.

After months of chopping my grannies' wood and watering their gardens to earn some money, the set went on sale at the local Kmart for 25% off. This was my chance to own it. So I bought one as soon as I could! Finally this set I'd been yearning for what seemed an eternity was mine!

Only problem was after I built it, the set didn't seem that exciting...

The set comes with all the essential pieces for building a Pirate island, only problem was for its retail price it didn't come with enough. I think this is why I was initially disappointed, I was expecting more and The LEGO Group did a wonderful job of making the smaller LEGO sets look so much bigger than they really were. Fortunately now, the set can be acquired much cheaper from eBay and my budget has vastly increased so that initial disappointment has long faded. Now I can look at this set for what it really is!

The design looks cohesive, not a "hotch potch" throw-together like its mid 90's counterpart, 6296 Shipwrecked. Everything is well balanced and the set is a marvellous depiction of two shipwrecked survivors who've built a small shelter with what little they could muster. Still, all these years later I feel the need to reiterate its a bit on the small side.

Probably the most alluring aspect of Shipwreck Island is the attention to detail - there's a cannon complete with cannon balls, a palm tree, a flag, a palm tree, some leaves, treasure chest with treasure, even a tub with an oar to assist one of the pirates in seeking help. There is also plenty of mini-figure weaponary and ample fauna for the size of the island.

Shipwreck Island is definitely a good set for parts and if you were MOCing with 6270 Forbidden Island the pieces might prove useful. However, Shipwreck Island by itself would seem to have limited MOCing possibilities even if more than one was used the problem would persist due to lack of substantial building elements.

As a set Shipwreck Island would make a charming addition to your collection, it has a nice design and plenty of accessories to keep thing interesting. I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5, but this rating system forces me to round up to 3.

And now its your turn! Rate the set (not the review) and then leave some comments!

Here's my review:

I remember being obsessed about this set because it looked so good in the catalogues and the box. Then one day it went on special at KMart so I just couldn't resist buying it. But I remember being slightly disappointed when I opened and built it. Despite having a nice assortment of pieces there didn't seem a whole lot to it for its price. I think it looks alot bigger in the box picture than what it actually is.

Still there's plenty to do and its a cute looking pirate island. The pirate in the tub with the oar is a nice touch as is the white flap above the cannon. These little touches give subtle hints of these pirates having been shipwrecked without the need for extremities the later shipwrecked sets went to.

The set needs more substantial structures because the ones it has is rather minimal but other than that I'm happy with concept and its execution. So 3 stars from me!

I loved this set! To me it is the kind of large scale accessory pack Lego should do! I all ready have a lot of basic bricks, and castle parts, this is like a way too 'piratize' your collection. It is also cool for a kid just to unpack and play with (in a more intellignet way than the current 'ready to play' Lego.)

Great Set!

God Bless,

Nathan

Mr Norro, what do you mean by "ready to play LEGO"?

I haven't bought a LEGO set from a store since 1993 so I'm a bit out of touch.

I haven't bought a LEGO set from a store since 1993 so I'm a bit out of touch.

'ready to play' lego is my own nickname for those sets that show the model in a few stages on the back of the box (rather than alternate designs) to convince parents it will be easy to build. Some of these sets even had the stages of the model in different bags, open bag 1 to build _ , open bag 2 to build _ . They were mostly characterized by poor design and an emphasis on 'playing' with the finished model rather than 'building' with the pieces... JoJo assocciates it with the change of Lego's slogan to 'Play On' (like we don't build now, we just play). It also fits in with the movie lines, where it is important to re-enact the scene, rather than build with the pieces...

God Bless,

Nathan

This set does come with quite a few specialised pieces but each is useful for so many other purposes. Why isn't LEGO like this anymore?

4 points from me. I got it for my birthday once. It's not a masterpiece and the design is not particularly great, but it has many useful parts like the cannon or the palm tree or the white flag or the treasure chest. Another parrot and monkey are always welcome and the baseplate looks good. I remember I just loved the small cave in which the chest can be put, it inspired me to make my own similar ones, in which the treasure was completely hidden and impossible to be seen by strangers.

Don't suppose you took pictures of these variations? I'm assuming they were created before digital cameras and Internet access was popular...

3 stars, I don't like the blue cannon base, the raft from the Spaniard is weird, and some of the colours are weird too....

you are mixing this set with other set...

This little island is a perfect accessory pack and is working as a small piratebase aswell.

This was my first pirate set and i got it when I was 5, it was a birthday present of course :-P And I still have every piece from that set(there are teethmarks on a one palm leaf ;- maybe my mom told me that I should eat more sallad :-D ) Box is missing but instructions are in decent shape. I believe that's pretty good for a 5-year old to look after his own stuff, I'm still amazed about that..

I have to give this set 5/5

Great set and very playable. Ohh..memories.. :'-)

4/5 This is a decent set. I couldn't see being on that small of an island for any length of time, but the baseplate could be useful for making part of a larger fort. It does come with some useful pieces such as the cannon.

Excellent review, Mister Phes! Very well thought out, and I like the backstory to go with it X-D

I'd have to give this set a two, because while it's a nice little set...it seems very overpriced for what you said! The minifig count isn't bad, however the actual set? I'd maybe say it's worth $10...it's comparable to the new Castle set, The Final Joust except maybe your set has a few more pieces. I'd expect the final Joust to sell for about $5US, so I'd give this $10 tops.

It's a great little set though, and I love the idea of that bucket raft (nice piece for such a small set), but again the price killed it for me.

i'd say this is a perfect 'army building' set for the pirate theme, all important elements of the pirates are there: a cannon, two soldiers and treasure... then there's the tree and the rare bird, if i'm not mistaken, a colored bird is so much more valuable than the all reds... really, a perfect set if you want to build large 74 cannon-ship...

but as a set, not all that amazing...

Huh... that blue dude can walk on water...

I agree with sne, not an exciting set as such but surely interesting for pirate people to stock up their "army". I always like the soldier sets better.

So, I give it a 3 for the walk-on-water dude and the nice island setting (which I've always liked with Pirates sets).

I always liked this set And I was very happy when I get it back in 1989.

It has everything that makes Pirates great, 2 pirates with no longer the standard grin but 2 different faces (new in 1989), a very nice parrot (new in 1989), a lovely monkey (new in 1989), a chest (not new) with real moneypieces in it(new 1989), a tub (new, the fabuland was different I thought), a 1 version Palmtree (new 1989), a baseplate with a Island on it (new 1989), a cannon which can shoot pieces (new in 1989) and new 17th century weapons

Only the shark and Soldiers aren't in this set , but they were in other small sets

And that only for 25 Gulden (+/- 11 euro)

4/5

The main reason i gave it a 4 is the fact that there are 2 figs and a cannon for this set.

I'm guessing it'd cost 5-10 USD when it was originally released. and that's a good price for the cannon, figs and accessoried too. *y*

Although i don't know how much it'd cost on BL right now :-/

P

Edit:

This set also comes with a shooting cannon. I've always liked those better than the non-shooters.

Also, this set is available for less than 10 USD on BL.

This set looks very cohesive as Mr. Phes pointed out.

And it's very colorful and alive. It has green (palm tree), red (parrot), ...

I gave the review a 4/5!

I do have 1 technical remark. The part the arrow is pointing at looks a bit artificial. The line is too straight.

I'm no expert, but I hope you get the idea :-D

Actually, it looked fine before. Because you could see it was in the water. Sure the line could be a little bit more wavy, but less than what you have.

Oh, and nice review Mister Phes. 4/5 for this fellow.

That's mighty kind of you, Mr Bonaparte! But you're supposed to be rating the set, not the review!

I'm to too fussed. This is a just a image for a hobby website, so I'm not going to dedicate hours in polishing the graphics like I would if it were paid work - there's not enough hours in the day for that.

I rate the set 3/5! But what to do? I already voted!

So does anybody besides me actually OWN this set?

I own part of it. It's all missing pieces. This is because I got in an auction with a Black Seas Barracuda.

I rated this set a 5/5. Why? Because it is a pirateset from 1989 with that authentic pirate feel to it, very charming.

It is the only set of the 1989 pirate-release that I do not own yet, I don't know why really because, as mentioned before, it's quite cheap on bricklink and ebay...

I am just waiting to find this set in the back of a dusty old toystore somewhere in Germany or in the Belgian Countryside, and believe me: someday I will *sweet*

But what about in the mean time Mr Willems, shall you go ahead and purchase one from eBay? Or shall you wait for that glorious day when you're somewhere in Germany or in the Belgian Countryside, and you stumble across it in the back of a dusty old toy store?

Dammit... Why can't that ever be a reality for me! I'm going to have to go to Europe!
