I like the way you did the stop motion for this build. Very cool the way you build it up in a circular pattern, really makes the build pop.

Look for your video to be blogged soon.

I don't have either one yet, but I do have a pretty fair-size collection of older ships to compare them against. That being said, I think the size issue is probably the most for me. I enjoy detail on the inside, but if the ships just doesn't "look" robust enough from the outside... well it certainly wouldn't strike fear the heart of any sea-faring whelp, pirate or otherwise. For that, I prefer the QAR. However, I will eventually get one of both (if the good wife will permit).

@ZCerberus cool someone noticed the pattern! Lol I like thinking of it as a "snake" and try to base what piece should be placed next on that. It's cool that its noticeably. I agree about it popping, to me it makes it easier to follow the build instead of having the eyes moving around the screen sporadically

I voted I'd have to have them both, which is true because today the Black Pearl came from LEGO.shop and once I build it I will decided fully which is nicer. :pir-classic:

For those who said QAR without the bones I will cope my post from another board:

I did not think this qualified as MOC so didn't stick it in that forum. I thought the bones all over the ship were not accurate and a distraction. I also straightened the bow line color patterns. Built more of a top deck, and changed a lot of other stuff too. I think it turned out to be the best offset for the Imperial Flagship I have.

That looks so good. I really wish Lego did something like this in the first place.

Definitely agree. I was still on the fence, but leaning towards QAR. Seeing that modified one seals the deal for me. Not really a Pirates collector, but I have always wanted a Lego pirate ship.

Nice, I made a mod on the set a while ago but I kept the bones, I wasn't going for the most accurate ship anyway.

Either way, the Queen Anne's Revenge might not be liked for the multiple bones, it is a ship that offers a lot of possibilities regarding moc ships, more than the Black Pearl if you ask me :pir-classic:

Arrrgh. I am torn. IDK if I should get another BP to add to my other BP and MOC it up to make it look more like the real deal or go and get the QAR? Maybe I'll just go ahead and throw out both of those Ideas and get the Imperial Flagship? Decisions, Decisions?

I definitely favor the Pearl: Not only is it cheaper, but it's got a black hull! That might not be much of a factor for some people, but I've been wanting something I could use for making an Ironclad/late-19th century Armored Cruiser/Sidewheel steamer (i.e. Commodore Matthew Perry's "Black Ships") for a long time. I was sad that I couldn't afford the Time Ship when it came out, because it had a nice, gray hull for much the same reasons, and now, along comes the Black Pearl with a solid black LARGE hull, which will be perfect for one of my next major projects....

Well I broke down and got a QAR. I now understand every ones problem with it. Really for the $$$ I paid for it I expected a lot more detail. The BP that is $20 cheaper looks waaaaay better IMO. Don't get me wrong I still love both the ships but the BP wins hands down. About the only problem with the BP was the anchor. If I were to MOC it to be like the QAR then it would look nice. The thing that dissapointed me most about the QAR is the cabin. It's very small and again for what I paid for I should at least get a door area or at least and enclosed cabin like the real QAR.

BP 7/10

QAR 7/10

To say the least they both have their strengths and weaknesses!

That sounds like a good idea! I can't wait to see you make a steam ship using the black hulls. :pir-classic:

I have a Neo-Confederate Armored Cruiser (for my post-apocalyptic setting) semi-planned... Just need to get a set inventory off BrickLink (when it's added) so I can play around with the parts in LDD until it is actually available in stores around here. I'm currently working on designs for converting my Sea Serpent (old 1992 Black Knights castle ship) into two Neo-Confederate gunboats to provide escort for it.

Upon building the Black Pearl, I must say I like it alot more than the QAR. :pirate_sad2:

I agree. I was thinking of tearing down both the Pearl and QAR. Going out and getting another Pearl and building both to gather. Using some pieces from both ships.

Ugh, reading all the love for the Black Pearl puts me back on the fence. I think I'll decide with price and just get the BP if it goes on sale.

Great animation. I made my first one last week (the lighthouse) and just spent the last two nights making the Imperial Flagship in the same way. 12 hours so far, and I still need to do a couple of hours worth of finishing touches tonight, at which point I'll post it to YouTube tonight using the same name (Brainslugged) if you're interested in seeing it. I use my video camera to take the photos which fortunately has a remote so no camera shake. I also have it directly under a bunch of lights to try to avoid changes in lighting. I noticed that you zoomed in and out on specific bits during the build, but I chose to have the whole thing fit in the frame. I'm slightly worried this means everything will be too small to see very well, but I guess I'll find out tonight. Maybe I need to practice zooming and panning while building. Still trying to work out whether the BP or QAR would make the best companion piece to it though.

Wow the Imperial Flagship?? I was thinking of doing the same kind of vid on all the ships at some point but that would be a lot of work. IFS must have been hard, I did the same thing for the Grand Emporium modular building and it took 3 days. I'll check it out when you post your vid.

I also noticed that the lighting changes was actually caused cause I wore a white shirt and it reflected a lot of light when I was too close to the ship (Not sitting in my chair behind the camera) I'm also probably gonna get a webcam and start using Helium frog to compose pictures. THat should get rid of the camera shaking.

from a practical poit of view:

the qar offers more hull pieces (the bp's hull is incomplete), and they're brown, so they'll match those in your imperial flagship set. important factors to consider if you're into moc'ing.

I prefer the queen annes revenge because I like the color scheme, stern, design, and overall construction a lot better. I also prefer all of the minifigs on the QAR to the BP since I personally did not care for Dead Mans Chest or At Worlds End so, my vote goes for the QAR. :pir-classic:

I bought the Black Pearl. While it is all very nice, I love the figs and the whole look of the ship, I hate the rudder! It is soo lazy and simple.

Ok - slightly off-topic but here's my stop-motion build of the Imperial Flagship if anyone's interested:

On-topic, still on the fence about whether to go for QAR or BP, but the fact that the BP doesn't have a hull rear really puts me off it. Having said that, the flimsy QAR build would really annoy me. Maybe I should just stick to Star Wars sets, or try and track down a Grand Carousel for a reasonable price.

I became a PotC fan in 2003. I was broke, and loved the Curse of the Black Pearl so much I saw it in the theatre 3 times. I watched Dead Man's Chest twice in theatres (one was a midnight showing) and I saw At World's End three times, two of which were on opening day. I saw On Stranger Tides twice in theatres. I love the Black Pearl, and I love these movies.

That being said, I cannot stand the look of the official Lego set for the Black Pearl. I think the set designers did a much better job on the QAR. If the Black Pearl looked the same way as the one in the Lego game, it would win, hands down, best looking Lego pirate ship ever. As it sits right now, I would place it somewhere at the bottom of the list.

The BSB is the standard by which all other ships are measured. It was the first one, and the best one. Rigt behind it, I placed the SES... Until now. (edited to clarify) I've put the SES and QAR together and I think its a draw. They both have things I love and hate. Example: I absolutely hate the cannon mounting on the SES, but I love the old rigging and masts. I can't really stand the style of the "new" masts.
