Update Info: I started working on the stern. The first deck is done and soon I will start building the second deck. More pics to come soon. I also have some other small updates coming soon. mobricki Posted July 3, 2011 (edited) Here is my July update. I'm still waiting on about 5 bricklink orders. just got my order in from TLC with a couple POTC sets. I started working on the stern and the bow but there is still plenty of work to be done. Feel free to critique my work on the bow and stern. I also did some work on the ships officers. Sebeus I Posted September 20, 2011 hmmm, I'm sorry to say but I think this crossection shows a very unlikely shape of a warship. Normally the lowest gun deck should also be the widest. The reason for that was to prevent the ship from capsizing. this is nice sketch of a realistic crossection: I do think this ship would make a very nice model for displaying and I'm looking forward to the end result and I'd love to see a detailed interior, full of occupied minifigures preparing for battle Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
mobricki Posted September 20, 2011 (edited) How many imperial flagships did you bought? I bought 2 Imperial Flagships and the rest are pieces from my collection. I will be making a more realistic version later after I get some more practice building large sailing ships. This is my first large model after coming out of my dark ages. This is actually the third version of this ship the first version is the one on the first page of this post and the second one never made it past the first deck. The fourth version coming later will have all the proper deck plus the guns will be spaced out right and not directly above each other. Captain Becker Posted September 20, 2011 I agree whit Sebeus from the shape, also i think you should rally overlap the cannon ports. And thirdly, i am not sure about the ships stern. At the back its just fine, but from the side.... Im not sure about that, i think you should make the stern much more shorter than it is now. I think that would look a bit better. The kinetic energy of the recoil would be absorbed by the vessel's frame. If built in a good way, the ship might withstand the actual broadside. But in any case, the caulking would rupture and the ship would become seaunworthy due to all the incoming water. But it would be even more propable that the frame would simply break. Thanks for mentioning this detail. I am aware of this fact but because of how the ship is designed it wouldn't be feasible to build it that way. I think that this is a problem of practicability. I think we all can see that this project lacks some technical and historical accuracy but what can one do when doing a MOC of that sheer size? Captain Blackmoor Posted September 20, 2011 A fantastic build! The size is amazing! I like the stern a lot, the lanterns are very nicely done as well. Overall the whole ship has a nice coloursheme. But I would certainly use Sebeus' suggestion as it makes your ship far more realistic. My suggestion is to make the gunports offset, now they are straight on top of eachother. I would also create a gap in the main deck for ventilation and light. I'd suggest to take a close look on ship models and/or other reference sources, depending ofcourse on how realistic you want your end product to be. Keep it up, it will be a beauty! mobricki Posted September 30, 2012 (edited) I had to move from Germany to Pennsylvania since I was in the US Air Force and I thought I had the ship pretty well protected along with my collection of modular buildings but they received pretty heavy damage over the move. I had also run out of brown plates at about the same time. Unfortunately due to all the damage and me not being willing to spend any more money on this project. I will rebuild it slightly smaller but still pretty grand by LEGO standards. I had also said I would try to move all the minifigs over to fleshies but that will never happen unless the prices go down on fleshies. I did double the amount of marines that I had for the ship. Due to the fact that I am currently obsessed with trains and the modulars I probably won't be working on this project again for awhile. I think I can understand, I have a slow project too, wich has not been touched for many months, because of the huge work needed. By the way, yourr widest part is nearly 36 studs, wich means approx 12 meters, and it t would be very accurate on a heavy frigate (maybe a 2 decker instead of 3), the problem on those dimensions is also with the bird's view, wich make your ship mostly straight.. Morthen Posted October 1, 2012 Yea sure its big, and yes it can have a single broadside at 67 cannons, but where is the details???? thats the tricky part about theese giant builds, i myself made a ship, that contains a single broad side of 30 cannons (its one meter long) custom hull, and it contains alot of details. Dont take this to personly, but i find your stern/cabin, really borring to look at, yes it has four decks, but where is the soul?
