Interesting topic.

I think Ralph summarized it very well. My thoughts on the topic are very much the same. Before no one comments on a MOC I posted, because nobody likes it I'd rather get constructive critism on how to improve it or why it is bad as just get no feedback at all. I'm doing LEGO as a hobby for only three years now (I did not have any LEGO in my childhood). The first real MOC I build must be about two years ago. I think my creations have improved a lot since then, but I'd still call me a 'beginner' and would be thankful for any tip and hint to improve my building skills.

A special code or phrase in the topic title or initial post might be a good idea, to encourage everybody to give you this feedback.

I think what could be good is a big index with each building technique having its own specialist MOCer and its own tutorial topic.

An index of building techniques sounds like a good idea. The questions how to group things in such an index so you can easily find it.

Regards,

Sleepie

You could divide it into specialized uses (i.e.Boatbuilding), landscaping, illegal connections, etc.; but ultimately you'd need a good search feature.

Some members (myself included) put 'C&C welcome,' for Comments and Criticism.

Oh yes! I request criticisms. I love the idea! I think an academy would be excellent. only those who are thick-skinned enough to receive bombardments of criticisms should join. Excellent thinking, legoman!

And those who don't like the Idea, could just not join.

Yeah, I agree with Big Cam.

If people want advice on how to improve the MOC then they should put WIP in the title, elsewhere people should get the sense that when a topic has a creation in which is nicely photographed... is finished and un-open to improvement. However does it really matter if someone posts a little criticism in your topic, maybe listen to what they say or ignore it, after all we are all here to act and socialise online as a community and we are also here for inspiration and to find ways to improve our skills. So if we start posting short phrases which mean you don't want criticism then we could be missing out on a tip which could really improve quality of an MOC in the future.

Just my two cents.

Eskallon

Eh, the way I do it is post a topic, request C and C, and then compile the criticisms and do another version.

But you have to make sure those criticisms are valid. I got some people saying my T-47 was too short or that it was the wrong color (they wanted orange, but I made a Rogue Leader model), and those weren't good criticisms.

Yes. I think we need to elaborate on those, if at all, since most of the techniques there aren't very specific.

Well the more sub-forums the better. for example:

I. Landscaping

-Tree structure

-Hills

-Ground cover

-Rocks

Ect...

This would make it navigable, and easy to use. :classic:

Yeah, for example my BARC was called 'to blocky' which isn't helpful at all, it's un-specific and i can't work off of it. That's why I suggested that the teachers would write a summary of a students work, rather than a letter grade.

And there are plenty of new techniques surfacing every day. Not to mention that ideally we'd have a list of previous usages for the technique, so if I wanted I could search for, say, 'tree', and all the techniques use for tree would come up, even if they aren't listed under 'Landscaping->Flora->Large Plants'*.

*I just made that up as a progressively more specific path to where most trees could go.

 I suppose you get the picture- Landscaping>Faunga>Greenery>Trees> Large> Trees with interior. *huh*

As a beginner to MOCing I would love to see somre sort of dedicated space to this. I've got a Great Hall MOD currently in the HP section but I'm not sure if people go in to here to view it if Harry potter isn't their thing.

Could there be a section for MOC WIPs that people can post to? And I do like the idea of sub topics on building techniques if they were quitespecific.

Well as a general rule, if you build HP you want HP advice and you'll get HP advice if you post it in the Licensed forum. Those people who don't post there aren't HP fans and probably couldn't offer the best advice so far as HP building is concerned.

The Advanced Building Thread has some essential links, but I do not think the techniques need to be categorized in any manner. The point of a technique is to play with it and use it, the applications do not need to indexed, as most of the techniques have multiple applications. I would love to see that thread become more active (maybe pinned? -so people who do not know it is there encounter it?), I would love to see people making tutorials that can be added to it.

As for some kind of 'Academy', I do not think it is necessary. Most of topics which have WIP seem to me to get a fair amount of attention, and generally finished MOC topics get replies, although maybe positive comments outweigh critical comments. I know I am not particularly active, but when I do comment on a MOC I generally have a question or a slight criticism for the builder, and I when I post a MOC I value the replies which question or criticize, because they give a different perspective which I often take on board to use in the future. I never change my MOC (usually they are sorted as soon as I make pictures, for the next shiny thing syndrome), but I do think about different things when I move on to pastures new. Also as Big Cam says, nobody wants to see (or build!) a "standard style" - as approved by the Academy! Design by Committee!

I think Eurobricks is a friendly place, and I think the majority of members would be happen to explain a certain aspect of their MOC if asked in a thread in which they are publicizing their creation. I don't mean "Instructions Please", but a certain relevant question about a particular part. And I would even go as far as to say, if they don't want to answer relevant and intelligent questions about their MOC, why did they bother to post it here?

In a general sense, and this is just my perspective, I think we have great resources available to improve our MOC as it is now. A wealth of image sharing sites constantly 'up the game', browsing Flickr will not only give inspiration, but gives new techniques, new ideas. Many people post explanation shots, and for what I am interested in reverse engineering from photos generally gives me the essentials of most ideas I wish to plagiarize.

Another reason for not having this is if we did, I assume there would be levels like the current academy, along with tags to identify the level reached.

All this will do is give tags to the extremely talented/popular moc builders and then others who may have different tastes might never get up through the ranks, but they like the way they moc.

AS I said before moc'ing is more personal than reviewing because it's your interpretation, not a pre defined set. It's really hard to create a system of different levels to achieve when there can't be a set standard for each level.

It works with the reviewers academy because everyone can be trained to do a good review and you can't alter the set in a review so it makes a more even playing field.

Again, a good idea on paper but much harder to implement.

That's why I brought up not getting 'graded' or 'graduating'. It would be, more like a MOCers development forum.

Hello everyone I have noticed at least in the US the absence of some good LEGO RC (mostly RF not IR) sites. I have seen some postings in the Eurobricks for items but there really is not a site that I know of that is dedicated to something like this. Would anyone be interested in a Forum that is dedicated just to RClego related items including cars, trucks, boats and such. One reason I was thinking about this is that there is a cool site called InanimateReason and he doesn't have a forum to show off some of the things that can be built with his products. Plus, I have in the past been into RC cars that were truly RF in nature and Lego really doesn't do things like this very often (there is the SuperSonic Car and the Dirt Crusher, etc) but not really anything to date.

If people are interested I'd like to hear from you and also if you'd be interested.

I am still looking at what BB software to use and who can do a a Lego logo (By the way, I like the one here on Eurobricks) and such so this is mainly a discovery right now. A domain name has already been purchased, though!

I not ever want to compete with the Eurobricks site as it has its own cool nature but just something that is Specific. Ideas?

I'd be interested to see MOC's that people have with RC functions. I've never built any RC MOC so I can't say I'd frequent the site any more than I look through flickr or MOCpages for ideas and to see what people are building.

Hi rclego, and welcome to Eurobricks.

Please don't bump a post unless you've something new to add. If there are few replies it's probably an indication that there is little interest in your idea. If you wish to drum up interest, then I'd suggest building up a reputation on EB - why not introduce yourself here first of all, then perhaps post some of your MOCs in the relevant forum on EB (Technic, as others have said). If people like them, then they may show more interest. But please don't use EB just to advertise your site.

Best of luck with your endeavours.

Sorry about the bumping I was unaware. As for introductions I'd love to introduce myself. I'm from the US and have always enjoyed Legos especially growing up when my mother used to bring them home from one of the factories when it was in Loveland, CO. Unfortunately, I don't have those Legos anymore as she sold them when I went into the military (I didn't even know it till later). Later on, I got into RC cars and helicopters and then when I got married and had kids have reverted back to Legos selling my other toys (RC helicopters). I still love the plastic pieces and my 5 year son has quite a few sets of the standard bricks that he plays with but still loves the Fisher Price Trio's because he can build quickly and move on from project to the next (You know 5 year olds. with an attention of about 5 minutes :tongue: ) I have always wanted to integrate a bit more between the Legos and RC and know that Lego has had some ventures into the RF market (Lego Supersonic, Lego Challenger and a few others)but seem to be sticking closer to the IR and Bluetooth market now. This is one of the reasons I have been pondering starting a RCLEGO site. Its main focus would be items that are LEGO with motors and such. If it does not have some sort of transformer or battery it would won't be part of the site.

Hope this helps.

I would like to offer the idea of creating a subforum for Lego Store reviews. Thoughts on PAB walls, etc. The subforum could be "tree style" of country, then state (for US) or city, then city/store name.

For example, I'm heading to Atlanta this weekend, and would like to know what people think of the Lego Outlet in Discover Mills, particularly the PAB wall. I know you can start a thread about this specific spot, or do a search for it, but having a central location for it would be quite convenient.

Thoughts?

Not sure if it is cool to suggest a major change like this. If it's out of place, please delete, MODs.

In my opinion, no way, there just isn't the demand for it. I mean even if you reviewed every LEGO store on the planet, you'd barely fill a page in that forum.

If anything maybe a review index could be added to the general discussion forum, that way as reviews of sites come in they can be added and accessed only when needed instead of creating an entire forum for them.

A topic in this forum would suffice I think. Are there LEGO store reviews on our site already? :look: I didn't search, I'm being lazy. Sorry, I'm at work.
