'Come now, don't be shy, step into the light!' By looking at this line, I think it is clear that I have Smaug the stupendous in this amazing set. He appeared in the movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in 2013. I bought it in Hong Kong while I was traveling with my wife for honeymoon. Lets get started. Overview Name: The Lonely Mountain. Theme: The Hobbit Year: 2014 Pieces: 866 pieces Minifigures: 5 and a dragon Price: £99.99 / $129.99 / 129.99€ Introduction Durin's day is ending and they still can't find the keyhole of the secret door. But Bilbo isn't giving up hope after the sun went down. Knocking and gnawing at the grey stone wall while the dwarves leave the mountain, he finally found the key hole when the moon light shines onto the door. The 'last light' meant the moon light! He yells at the company and Thorin picked up the key left to him by his father Thrain, opens up the secret door and found this treasure in it, 79018. The Box As usual the box art is amazing. The dark green background is very nicely matched with this sand green LEGO set. At the front of the box you can see the battle between the dwarves and Smaug is going on and quite a lot of gold is used in this set. At the back, the dwarves are busy preparing while Smaug sneaks around to find them. Lots of play features in this set and the minifgures are very nice showing at the side of the box. The Instruction This book is thick, with hard binding at the side. There is love and hate to this kind of booklet. The love is there is only one book to keep and the hate of course is that it is hard to stay in place when you are building unless you really fold it at the page turner which is quite damaging to the bindings. In the list, you can only find six dwarves in the whole series unlike the thirteen ones at the previous sets. Maybe the other dwarves were less seen in the movie. The Minifigures In this set, you get five exclusive minifigures and one exclusive Dragon, The Smaug. Before this set was launched, we all thought that LEGO would be lazy enough to use the old castle dragon as Smaug but it turns out that this new mold of dragon is very awesome! In this picture, the head sculpture of Smaug captured all the details very accurately. 'My teeth are sword' and the burning eyes are nicely carved out. These four dwarves and Bilbo gets new armors and new weapons. Dwalin is holding a pearl gold axe with trans green axe, Kili with a 'Morgul Blade', Fili gets back his old double sword and Balin has his dark red club. I suppose the Lonely Mountain really housed loads of treasure for them. All of them has alternate face except Dwalin as he is bald. All the dwarves are angry, Bilbo is truly scared of meeting Smaug. Under the beard. Both of them have nicely printed torso under their bulky beard. The belts are amazingly designed and you can see wrinkles and battle damaged faces of Balin and Dwalin. The arms are also using very nice metalic color to assimilate the armor they are wearing. The comparison between casual wear dwarves and working attired dwarves. Same as Bilbo with three different outfit. The designs are totally different and all of them are from different sets. By looking at them you can appreciate the financial condition of them before and after claiming Erebor. Again, Santa is here and he is very different from Balin. The Dragon, Smaug! 'Take your cover!' Now you can see the full picture of this ferocious beast. The wings are made of silicone (I think) to make the flaps fold. It has two legs with the claws at the wings as his hands just like the movie. I think this is the largest dragon LEGO has ever produced. He stood up to 24 cm tall, 47.5 cm long and 42.5 cm wide. You can see when the wings are closed, he still can stand properly and the claws can be bent to make him more stable on the floor. The body part printing is so detailed that you can see what Girion did back in the years with his black arrow. The wings are attached to his body with a three holed ball joint. This makes him very widely pose-able. You can turn the wings 180 degree each side. He cannot be ride as there are no seat given at the back of the spiky body. However please be careful as the center black spike on a jumper is quite loose and you might lost it. The tail is also exclusive to him and its quite long if you look at it sideway. Lets have some dental check up for this yellow teeth fella. There are a few degree of mouth opening for him and if you look at the picture you can imagine Benedict Cumberbatch's voice talking. All of them represents different expressions I think. First degree- talking, Second degree- yelling, and when the fire attached, you know what he means. haha. Look into the throat, you can see a stud hole for fire attachment which is much nicer compare to old dragons. For comparison, you can see Smaug is much more larger in size compare to the dragon from the castle set 70403. Old dragon has two hands, with a pair of stiff and smaller wings. Tail design is different too and I think Smaug is much more superior than this old dragon of LEGO. Lets look at the mouth. Fire from chin is so much old school but it had its place back then. This is an old picture taken before real Smaug was introduced. Quite decent at that time for a dragon. The Build The gold 'mountain'. This is a three layered build which you can store treasures inside. At the bottom layer, you get a pearl black long sword and a trans green goblet which is very nice, and second layer with three different colored gems. The lid with gold cup makes the third layer. I liked all these gold pieces stacking around each other. There are plenty of nice small builds in this set as in the picture. Thorin's chair was decorated with stickers and a trans clear printed round tile representing the Arkenstone. As comparison, Theoden looks much poorer with a small throne. haha. The second build is the chain pulley pulling a bucket. It was attached loosely to the railway so that it can slide along it. Lots of technic pieces in this build and I like the chain. The brown knob is to turn the wheel and raise or release the bucket of gold. This build is a furnace filled with dome shaped gold and a long pole to be attached into the pin hole. Its a quite large furnace designed to launch piles of molten gold to attack the dragon. As you can see, the furnace can be turned 360 degree to aim. Firstly you load the bucket with gold. Then you raise the bucket. Pour it into the furnace. Then launch the gold! To my pocket please. haha After a few hours of building, this is the full build of The Lonely Mountain. The use of sand green pieces are very nice matched with some grey and brown. This dwarvish mine is very nicely designed and its large enough for Smaug to play around and smacking the pillars. Quite some annoying stickers to be applied but with Smaug and Arkenstone I don't complain much. One more play feature at the front of the build. Stay tuned, the back is also interesting! The black round knob is to push the ladder under the throne. The secret door with a key hole, and a pile of gems with the Arkenstone on top of it. If you notice, on top of the Arkenstone there is a BURP piece to make the bulk of the stone at the front. "Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole" I am FIRE. ConclusionThe Smaug made up the whole value to this set. I bought this because of the dragon and others are a bonus to the set. Smaug is very pose able but need great skill to take good shot of him. Most of the angle makes him look ugly. The build is adequate to the size of the dragon and of course you can buy a few more sets to enlarge it. The minifigures are all exclusive to the set and makes this set much more worthy to get.Review SummaryPlayability: 9/10 - The mechanisms are great to be play with like the actions in the movie while they are fighting the dragon!Design / Building Experience: 9/10 - The GOLD pieces and the sand green pillars are so nicely used in the set instead of all grey like in the movie.Minifigures: 9/10 - Great minifigures! All the printings and the details exceeds all expectations.Price / Value for money: 9/10 - I think the value of the money spent for this set goes to the Serpent from the North. Overall: 9/10 - I bought it in 2014, and after three years, I still bring out Smaug and play with him. Run Bilbo! 'Don't be shy...' Hope you enjoy the review. Hi, this is one of my favorite set. The Hobbit House. OverviewName: An Unexpected GatheringYear: 2012Pieces: 652Minifigures: 6Price: £59.99 / $69.99 / 79.99€Introduction The first movie of The Hobbit was called An Unexpected Journey. That was a story of a reluctant hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with Thorin and the company to reclaim their homeland, Erebor. Alright, Erebor was too far away from what's here. Here lies the home of Bilbo Baggins, The Shire. Or some called it a Hobbit hole. The Box At the first glance of the box you will already be fascinated by the box art. You get four dwarves in this set and a very cozy house of Bag End. Behind the box you get to see the interior of the house and some play features you get in the set. You can remove the roof to play with them inside the house. The Instruction You got two booklets in this set. Inside it with numbered bags of four pointing to what shape they will take after building it. At the end of the book, you get the list of minifigures to get to complete the whole series. Have you got them all? Stickered Parts These are stickers on one book and three tan tiles. The book cover was the same with the one he wrote his story for Frodo to read. The BB was signature of Billbo Baggins. The other three stickers were maps drawn by Bilbo after his adventures with the dwarves, or before? The Build After the first bag you can see the wall of the house being built. In front there is the base of the window on your left and the base of the door on your right. On the inside there are a bit of details with the rack and stove building up the dark tan floor. After the second bag, the whole building can be appreciated already. You can see the large green door with Gandalf's 'drawing' on it. The big round plate was printed and exclusive to this set. The interior consist of 3 parts, the rack where Bilbo put his Sting, the stove with a broom, and his study area with a very nice looking window. A clearer view to the rack area. There is The Sting and two bottles of potions. The rack was very nicely built with only one stud width and round pillars. The other side of the room. The stove was 'fired' by two 1x1 translucent red round plate. There is another rack with a letter and a bottle of wine. The trans clear window was amazing! After bag four which is the roof with the chimney and a small tree, you complete the set. The wood planks are actually stickers but with this kind of design, I'm not complaining. The whole view was magnificent! The Minifigures You get six minifigures in this set as introduced in the picture. Gandalf was everywhere! Pointy hat Gandalf was in three other sets which is 9469 Gandalf arrives, 30213 Gandalf at Dol Guldur polybag, and 79010 The Gobiln King Battle. The same Gandalf appears here with a sling bag full of weed and his pointy hat. Bilbo Baggins. He is in his cozy home outfit but he doesn't look comfortable with all the dwarves rushing in his house. He got an alternate sad face as he saw them wrecking here and there! Balin. He is the eldest dwarf in the company and you can tell with his white long beard. You can see wrinkles all over his face and white eyebrows. He is wearing black gloves and he has an angry face at the back. Some say he looks like Santa. Does he now? Bombur. His hair is interesting as the beard was connected with his belly. Underneath the belly was a printed belly in case you lose the hair. He has an alternate face too, find the difference. Bofur. He is bringing his Blue Mountain weed in his pouch on his torso print. The furry hat was very nice mold and well printed. Dwalin. One of the warrior dwarf in the company. He doesn't have alternate face as he is bald. But his back head print was a nice band of dark blue tatto extending towards the front. Story Telling One day, Bilbo was preparing his dinner after reading some books at his cozy little study corner. The garden was quiet as usual, with the sound of birds chirping peacefully. What a nice day! Suddenly, a wagon arrives with a wizard sitting on it. Frodo? Oops, wrong timeline. Okay, lets go back. Now Bilbo welcomes Gandalf to the bench in his garden. Both of them chit chatting, smoking weed in this quiet night. Before Gandalf actually left the house, he drew a GPS signal for the dwarves to gather here using Waze. Knock knock, here comes the first dwarf at your service. Bilbo says, hey! Who are you? After that, more and more dwarves came barging in and Bilbo says, Oh No! My house is so messy now! And the story ends with Gandalf persuading Bilbo into joining the adventure. Bilbo: But they are raiding my foods! Conclusion This set is meant for The Hobbits fans out there! Especially if you've been to New Zealand which I haven't. The realistic design of the house with the arch round pieces and the large round door was astounding. And four dwarves down, nine more to go!Review SummaryPlayability: 8/10 - This is not for play. But it was excellent for story telling!Design / Building Experience: 9/10 - Very nice building walls and windows and the furnitures for interior design.Minifigures: 9/10 - Great minifigures! All the printings and the details exceeds all expectations.Price / Value for money: 9/10 - The prices went up as it retires, but still worth it. After four months of designing, re-designing, parts-ordering, and building, I'm pleased to announce that my first LEGO Ideas project, the Lord of the Rings Advent Calendar, has finally been approved. Star Wars Advent Calendars have been immensely popular in the past, and I think that a Lord of the Rings A.C. would be even better. My proposed project includes micromodels of famous Middle-Earth locations and two exclusive figures: Santa Gandalf and Old Bilbo. I know that many people on this forum want to see LEGO release a set with an Old Bilbo minifigure in it, but since we're unlikely to get a Bilbo's Birthday set in any upcoming waves, this may be the only way to get him. Hi all. Fist attempt at a large MOC, 2nd since getting into the afol community. I'd made a tree (larger than the one used here) and brother joked it would look good on bag end, then saw a youtube video of someone who had stretched the original set to fit all the dwarves. So here's my attempt. It's made mostly from two unexpected gathering sets with some other bits thrown in for good measure. I have all the minifigs still to build. C&C welcome. Haven't quite the bit to 'smooth' out the walls so there's the odd random bricks but I have tried to disguise these. All in all it's taken a week to build around work and family commitments. I guess 12-15 hours. Enjoy.

Company of Thorin Oakenshield project - Compeleted!

Good evening! I am happy to announce that my project to build the company of Thorin Oakenshield from the Hobbit films. The project began 656 days ago in a land of which kind no longer exist in Middle-Earth when I posted bust of Balin in November 2012. It sort of grew into a full Balin, and got a brother Dwalin, and a cousin Oin, and some random Bifur guy... And well, I decided to build the dwarves, and then somebody asked (probably here on on EB) asked if I'd build Gandalf and Bilbo. And well, I did. You probably remember some of these MOCs (Kili even made it to the front page). The new ones here are Ori, Bilbo and Gandalf. Of course the story of the company doesn't end here. There will be conventions and exhibits to visit with these guys. There's heaps of more photos on my blog. Enjoy. At least I did enjoy building them! -
"I'm Going on an Adventure!" This creation was built for the second round of Mocpages' Middle Earth Lego Olympics contest. I succeeded in passing through the first round with my previous creation "No Loyal Friend", which has me currently ranked first in the contest. Anywho, the category for round two was Characters, with mine being selected as Bilbo Baggins. So I decided to build a creation that depicts the moment at which Bilbo drops his everyday life and runs towards his adventurous journey. Build Time: 3 Hours Enjoy! ~Nemo

MEC Category B: Pippin and the Barrow Downs Once Pippin got back from Gondor, it was too late. He had a taste for adventure and had to seek it out further. He decided to turn to the Barrow Downs that he, Frodo, Merry, and Sam wondered into on the way to Bree. After wandering around one barrow, he came across the entrance. After he moved the boulder aside, Pippin peered inside. He spied the riches of a long ago lord or king. Pippin grabbed one of the gold chalices lining the barrow to prove his tale to all the Brandbucks and Proudfoots in Hobbiton. Pippin would have us to believe that the long dead king sprung to life and chase him with an enchanted blade, but any sensible hobbit would not believe a word of it. I don't know where he and his young friends went off to for so long but I am too wise to believe in returning kings, cave trolls, or even long dead kings guarding their goblets. EDIT: I had started this MOC before the contest was announced. I released after I submitted it that it is 18 studs square, which is two studs too long each way. There was no easy way to slim it down so I decided to switch Bilbo for Pippin.

This my entry to the "There and back again" category. The build itself is actually pretty sturdy, even if it does not look like it is. Using a lot of dark brown robotic arms to fix the foliage, makes them connect so strong you can actually shake the whole vignette, wihtout loosing any parts. I have placed black bricks in the background to create this creepy feeling. The scene shows the chapter when the party reached Mirkwood and Gandalf is telling Bilbo, that he has to leave. Bilbo and the dwarves have to face the menaces of Mirkwood on their own. Even if it is also in the book, I prefered to add the dialoque from the movie, because I really like it. You've changed Bilbo Baggins. You are not the same Hobbit as the one who left the Shire. I was going to tell you ... I ... found something in the Goblin tunnels... Found what ? What did you find ? ... [hesitating] ... My courage ! Good. Well that's good. You'll need it. Thanks for hosting this great contest, I love everything from Middleearth. In this re-envisioning of the classic story, Bilbo decides that he's had enough of adventure and stays in Lake-Town while the dwarves continue on to the Lonely Mountain. Here's my first entry for this great contest. I was on a LUG exhibit (great) and ill (not so) and didn't have that much time to build, but managed to throw a bit of Bag End's hall and pantry together. This is obviously insipired by the book chapter An Unexpected Party as well as the movie. More photos can be found on my blog Cyclopic Bricks.

Hi all, This is my creation for the Middle Earth Contest category C. This moc is from the second Hobbit movie (The Desolation of Smaug) and it depicts the scene where Thorin and company are attacked by the Mirkwood spiders in Mirkwood. This is one of my favourite scenes from the movie and therefore I chose to recreate it in Lego. My moc features the tree Bilbo climbed, the old elven path though Mirkwood, one Mirkwood spider and the Mirkwood forest floor. I would love to hear what you think of my moc and any improvement suggestions you may have. Hope you enjoy it. The contest rules it say, "16 x 16 with minimal overhang". He's a pretty important character in the trilogy, and I'm surprised that LEGO hasn't made him yet. Hello Everyone. I would like to share my most recent MOC of one of my favourite scenes in The Desolation of Smaug. On the Doorstep. by SandMirror38, on Flickr Not a big build, and probably not very accurate to the film as I based it a little more from my imagination then the film... I had originally planned to keep this secret -like a fair few builds I've made recently- for Brickvention but I found that MELO was open again for 2014 and decided to enter it there! So yes there is 3 or 4 ,ore builds coming in 3 weeks or so and they are huge in comparison to sizes I normally build at ..... This is Bilbo as seen in the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. I based his design off of the video game version, but it didn't turn out completely accurate. I'm thinking the upcoming CMF Grandma's hair could work for him. Might be a bit too lady-ish, though? Feel free to use.

A while ago I started making unique weapons for Thorin's Company. These then got boxed up when I went to uni, and now I'm back for summer I'm getting round to finishing them off. First up is Orcrist, the Goblin-Cleaver. For this I used a silver ninja sword, blu tack and glue. It was supposed to just be a preliminary version, but I quite liked it. It's a bit untidy and needs work, but I thought it was okay for a mk1 :) And alongside Bilbo and Gandalf. I can't remember what piece i used for Glamdring except it was an unofficial piece I probably bought from firestartoys. Also, a shot of twelve Dwarves feasting in Bag End. And finally, I am looking for someone to share in an adventure.
