[WIP] 2017 Ariel Nomad Tactical [Prototype Chassis! VIDEO!!!]

I have finally got around to announcing my 40th Anniversary of Technic build! I am going to be making my first fully manual model in honor of the early Technic models. I am planning to build a 2017 Ariel Nomad Tactical, which is essentially a supercharged, street-legal sand-rail/Group B racer hybrid. The Real Thing: Ariel Nomad Ariel Nomad As you can see, it is a pretty awesome vehicle. It can do 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds, 0-100mph in 8.4 seconds, and it has a top speed of 125mph. It is rear-wheel drive only with a 6+R manual transmission, chain-driven by an inline 4-cylinder 2.4L K24 Honda i-VTEC engine, transversely mounted over the rear axle which produces 235bph (which can be upped with an optional supercharger) and 300lb-ft of torque. It is built for off-roading, as it has long-travel, unequal length, double-wishbone suspension, with Bilstein shocks, and approach/departure angles of 71 and 82 degrees respectively. To top all that off, it comes in whatever color you want it to. And the whole thing weighs less than 1500lb. Who wouldn't want one?! The Model: I am planning on a manual model with a 6-speed transmission, 3+R gearbox, HoG steering, full suspension, and hopefully a fake engine. And maybe in the future... Technic's 40th Anniversary - What are YOU going to do - Anything special?

So we have a thread where one can speculate what Lego will do for the 40th Anniversary of Technic……and we have one (or two) for the 40th Anniversary Chassis..... but my question is what YOU… personally, (if anything) will do to celebrate 40 years of Technic. Anything special? Going back to any favorite set/build? I still consider myself somewhat new to Technic. As a kid I was into Space, City and Castle themes, but never once owned a Technic set. Fast forward some 20 years, where I didn’t even know Lego was a thing for adults, and when school ended I re-found my Lego hobby. Only this time it was not in any of the themes I loved as a kid, but in Technic. 8070 was my first set back, and I loved it. But really, not only was it my first set back, it my first Technic set, period, so I really did not know any better. Since I have been back, 42009 has been my favorite set. Since my return I have built up a healthy collection, and therefore don’t buy many sets anymore, so I don’t have much opinion on sets in the last year (last set I bought was the Claas). But have to say, in the last five years or so, 42009 has been my favorite Technic set released. So, for the 40th anniversary for Technic I pulled my set off the shelf. Or should I say sets, three to be exact. The Grove thread had not started when I begin my MOC, and therefore didn’t have it to go off of. Essentially, I patterned the build off the Liebherr 1500 8.1 mobile crane. 8 axles, 6 steered and two driven. Used three 42009 sets, other pieces, for a total of what I estimate around 5,000 pieces. This is a project that I did a long time ago, as soon as 42009 was released. Although I have presented and played around alot with the lifting capabilities of the crane I have not presented other aspects or tested the driving, etc. It was dusty, not functioning, and needed quite a bit of work. I added some aesthetics, redid the mechanics and some of the electrical components (batteries corroded). The drive and steering had never been fully tested, though the boom and superstructure had, and I therefore set to making a little video of the whole MOC. Fun little project for Technic’s birthday, thought there would be no better way to celebrate it than re-live my favorite set (to date). Enjoy the video! -
I still remember exactly that christmas of many years ago when I was probably 6 or 7 (beginning of the '80s) and I received the 8860. I kinda knew it was coming (believing in Santa was gone...) as I pestered my parents for an entire year, so I woke up probably at 6am, rushed into the living room, grabbed the pack (I knew exactly the size by the tons of times I stared at the box in the local Lego shop) and I started to build it. It was an incredible day, and even afterwards that model was one of my favorite (together with 8851). Long story short, I had my dark ages, came back to LEGO 5 years ago with 8043, and when I saw the 40th Anniversay chassis, I knew I had to build it, and I also took a chance to buy again the original 8860, as many of my original sets went away during the dark ages. After building the two cars, I know I'm totally biased because of my story, but the old one is so much better! Some notes I took: - instructions: I didn't remember how more enjoyable were the old ones until I used them again. It's not a 1000 pages book with one step for each piece, rather just 20 steps with many pieces in each step, and many times you need to look carefully at the picture to spot were a piece has to go. Also, no 1:1 scale ruler on each page where there's an axle or a beam, just a number telling you which size you need. I've read someone else in the past saying that old style instructions were not pretending that we were stupid, and I totally agree. They are not difficult, rather more challenging, and thus more funny! - technic features: the old car has a differential and adjustable seats with both recline and position operated with gears. The new one has no differential, and seats can only be moved forward and backwards manually. Where the new one is better is steering, the rotating 2x2 plates in the old one are a bit awkward and really easy to detach while playing: - size: I like both, the old one is really big, even compared with new cars: but I also like the new compact design of the new one. In general, I'm not really happy with the new one. I totally understand that using three different existing sets to make a new one has challenges and compromises to accept, and kudos go to the designer, he/she did a great job under these conditions. But as @Sariel pointed out in his review, this is meant to be a 40th Year anniversary model, and as such LEGO Technic should have deserved something more "wow". My feeling when I finished to build the new, after I built the old, was a sort of "this is it???". In comparison, Ferrari built the F40 to celebrate their 40th anniversay, something truly special. This new 8860 gives me the feeling of something cheap and done in a hurry just to "do something". A feeling I don't like. We still have half year to wait for some true celebrating flagship set, and in a way I hope there's somewhere a secret special set besides those announced for the second half, otherwise if this is THE celebration set, I'll be really disappointed. Who cares the special 3L liftarm, give me a special set.

2016 has been a very successful year for LEGO Star Wars. There so far have been 37 Star Wars sets released (including the 9 sets to be released September 30th). They also made a new LEGO Star Wars TV show, The Freemaker Adventures which just aired its final episode. But 2016's UCS sets have sparked loads and loads of controversy, when the images and details of 75098 UCS Assault on Hoth it sparked outrage as many people though it costed way too much, didn't deserve the UCS title, and was a lazy attempt with so much incompleteness, and other complaints. The other UCS set is the 75159 UCS Death Star, it also has been criticized as a lazy attempt and a cash grab by LEGO. ^ 75098 UCS Assault on Hoth ^ 75159 UCS Death Star Set Reactions: Now I totally see everyone's point on 75098 and I think it was a very poor effort by TLG, but I differ from the majority on my opinion of 75159. I believe that 75159 is great, I have heard how upset people were when 10188 was discontinued, but it was very old and needed an update. Then when we got the update everyone is so outraged and upset with TLG for not changing it much. I see that people wanted something new, but 10188 was selling well for the 7.5 years it was being produced so why change it, everyone loved the set. Now I also see why people are upset about the price hike, but two factors called for it, first is that inflation sucks and accounts for roughly $50 of the increase, and second back in 2008 there was only LucasFilm with the rights to Star Wars, but now LEGO needs both Disney and LucasFilm licencing which isn't cheap, so it sucks but we know that this had to be done to continue to make profit. Also this might be slightly biased because I got to the LEGO and Star Wars buffet late and by the time I bought my first Star Wars set in late 2015 I was not yet big enough a fan to consider buying 10188, so I want 75159 badly an that is also my final reason for why there was nothing wrong with what TLG did with 75159, because there were so many more who wanted and couldn't get the original and we now have a second chance to get it.
