  1. Once again, the british newspaper The Sun are giving away free LEGO sets each day this week. I managed to get ym hands on a bunch of today's set, so thought I'd do a quick review. BASIC INFORMATION: Set Name: Star Destroyer Set Number: 30056 Number of Pieces: 38 Minifigs: 0 Price: FREE with The Sun (30p) Theme: Star Wars Year Released: May 2012 RESOURCES: Bricklink Brickset BAG: Front: Like most 'free' sets. The model comes in a small sealed bag. Back: INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions are printed on both sides of a small sheet. Including another neat image of the final model. Front: Back: PIECES: Considering it's only 38 pieces, this set is pretty useful, I can never have too many slanted plates, especially when building Star Wars MOCs. Spares: FINAL PIECE: Here it is. The final model. Very simple but as usual with these mini-scale models, it is very well thought out. And here's a image for comparison... TOTALS: (No mark for price, as it was free) Design: 10/10 Considering the scale I think it would be very difficult to beat this model. IT captures the shape and style of the vessel perfectly. Parts: 9/10 Great pieces, but nothing really special. Build: 9/10 Hard to criticize the build, very simple. Playability: 8/10 Great playability, children can hold it fly it through the air, and if they drop it, small enough not to explode! :) TOTAL: 36/40 I loved this set, I bought 5 of them. Great colours and really beautifully designed.

  10. As many of you may be aware, the british newspaper The Sun are giving away free LEGO sets each day this week. Click below for other reviews from the Sun's free LEGO week. Saturday - Republic Attack Cruiser Monday - Harry Potter Lab Tuesday - City Truck COMING SOON Wednesday - Alien Conquest Jet Pack COMING SOON Thursday - Cars 2 Gremlin COMING SOON Friday - Ninjago Ninja Training COMING SOON Saturday - Harry Potter Trolley COMING SOON BASIC INFORMATION: Set Name: The Lab Set Number: 30111 Number of Pieces: 30 Minifigs: 1 Price: FREE with The Sun (30p) Theme: Harry Potter Year Released: 2011 RESOURCES: Bricklink Brickset BAG: Front: The plastic bag is pretty standard, but it doesn't show a key feature of the model, which we'll come to later. Thw graphic in the top right hand corner is from HP6 The deathly Hallows. Back: Like most bags, it has a small brick to show the scale of the pieces. INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions are printed on two sides of a neatly folded piece of paper along with a large graphic for the theme. Front: Back: PIECES: Not many pieces, but tan pieces are always great and these are my first Helmet Horns. I'm also glad to have more gold studs. Spares: Forgot to photo the spares. I got one extra gold stud and another helmet horn. MINIFIGURE: The main part of the set is the Harry Potter fig. The only criticism I have is that Harry is probably the most common mini-figure in the theme and it would have been nice to have a less over used figure. Harry's head and torso are printed on both sides which is only a little touch but it adds a lot. ASSEMBLY: Pretty basic assembly, this set is really about the free mini-figure. This is the secret compartment in the potions cabinet. I was surprised it wasn't featured on the packaging although I suppose they don't need to sell these models to people. FINAL PIECE: The final model is pretty simple but its made up by the fact there is a nice mini-figure. TOTALS: Design: 8/10 Pretty basic design and there are no particularly interesting techniques. Parts: 9/10 For just 30 parts you get quite a few neat pieces but nothing especially eye-catching. Minifigure: 8/10 Licensed mini-figures are always exiting but I think another student would have been nice. Build: 10/10 The build was very easy and quick. No complaints. Playability: 7/10 Not a lot to play with but a wand, tooth and two expressions for Harry's face bring it up to a 7. TOTAL: 42/50 A good set but a few extra bricks and a different minifigure would have been brilliant. HQ Photos on my Flickr
  11. As many of you may be aware, the british newspaper The Sun are giving away free LEGO sets each day this week. I intend to review all 7 sets beginning with this one.... Click below for other reviews from the Sun's free LEGO week. Saturday - Republic Attack Cruiser Monday - Harry Potter Lab Tuesday - City Truck COMING SOON Wednesday - Alien Conquest Jet Pack COMING SOON Thursday - Cars 2 Gremlin COMING SOON Friday - Ninjago Ninja Training COMING SOON Saturday - Harry Potter Trolley COMING SOON BASIC INFORMATION: Set Name: Republic Attack Cruiser Set Number: 30053 Number of Pieces: 41 Minifigs: 0 Price: FREE with The Sun (60p) Theme: Star Wars Year Released: 2011 RESOURCES: Bricklink Brickset BAG: Front: Like most 'free' sets. The model comes in a small sealed bag. No expense spared on the graphics however. All the necessary details are here and a great image of the ship in action. Back: All the small print plus a small to scale image of the Binocular piece. INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions are printed on both sides of a small sheet. Also including another neat image of the final model. Front: Back: PIECES: As far as Pieces go, this set is great. No less than 10 light grey jumper plates and 4 gorgeous dark red pieces. Spares: You can never have too many of those dinky slopes. ASSEMBLY: For such a small model the build is quite straightforward and if you can read the instructions above if you need to. I've taken this one mid-build shot to give an idea of how it all fits together. FINAL PIECE: Here it is. The final model. Very simple but as usual with these mini-scale models, it is very well thought out. The binoculars cleverly represent the two bridges the real ship has. And here's a image for comparison... TOTALS: Design: 10/10 Considering the scale I think it would be very difficult to beat this model. IT captures the shape and style of the vessel perfectly. Parts: 10/10 Another 10 as you get a lot of nice parts form such a small set. MY favourite being the dark red pieces! Build: 9/10 The build was simple. Simple Enough to fit into less steps on smaller paper. Save a bit of tree. Playability: 8/10 Small enough for children to hold in their hand and fly about without dropping it. You could also easily afford to buy a small fleet of these at just 60p for each newspaper. TOTAL: 37/40 I loved this set, I bought 5 of them. Great colours and really beautifully designed.
