Pirates Teamwork Contest

Our first Pirates Teamwork Contest (PTC) is a bit different from the regular contests you have seen here on Eurobricks so far. This contest is not only about building, but also about working together. Just imagine you are a LEGO designer requested to make a brand new modular Pirate set with a retail price point of around 75 Euro (85 US dollar). However, LEGO wants to have a 2nd set of this new modular line ready at the same time the first one gets released, and this second set will be designed by another LEGO designer. Both sets have to be inter-connectable via technic pins. So this allows you to make for example 2 houses of the same pirate village, or 2 modular sets that make together one medium sized fortress, etc.

So before you can start building you have to find a partner and together work out some things (what will you be building?, how will the 2 sets interconnect?, ...). LDD could help a lot to design the sets, but for entering the contest you need to make the sets with real bricks and post those pictures. You can use this thread as a starting point to find a partner, or instead PM/email another member with whom you like to team-up, ... . Because this process will take some extra time the contest will run for 2 months.

To be clear, this doesn't have to be only about pirates - islander, armada, civilian and imperial are all welcome too as long as it fits with the 'pirate universe'.

Need inspiration? Check out the MOC Indexes - in particular the Land-based MOCs - a wealth of ideas and techniques to explore.

The Rules:

  • The contest will run from January 1st till March 1st, so 2 months.
  • Your 'partner' has to be from another country or, in case of the US, at least from another state.
  • One entry per team which can be modified/replaced up until the deadline.
  • Both modules must be interconnectable via technic pins
  • Full customization is allowed, including decals, string, sails, 3rd party customs (e.g. Brickarms, Brickforge). Cutting and painting are permissible, but as the contest is judged by public vote, these may not be popular. I suggest visiting The Great Pirate Torso Library and the Sail Library Resource.
  • All building techniques are allowed, including tiling and SNOT bases. No minifig limit.
  • No clone brands
  • No digital entries
  • WIP topics are allowed if you like feedback during the building process
  • All entries must be new creations that have never been displayed anywhere before
  • Post max 10 pictures (maximum size 800x600) per module. You can link to an external gallery, where there are no image limitations. See these tutorials for help with resizing images and deeplinking.
  • Submitting you entry:
    • Each team entry (so the 2 modules) should be posted in one thread. So one of the 2 persons from a team posts both modules. All entry topics are to be created in the LEGO Pirates MOCs Forum. The topic title should be "PTC - Name1/Name2" with name 1 and 2 being the usernames of both the teammembers who've worked together.
    • Once you've posted your entry, make sure to post the URL to your entry topic in the Entry Overview Topic. This topic, which is pinned in our LEGO Pirates MOCs Forum, will be used to construct the voting topic, so don't forget this part!

[*]Judging will take place by a public vote.

[*]Since nobody except me was involved in the preparation of this contest everyone can join, Eurobricks staffers included.

The Prizes:

  • Both members of the winning team each get 250 Euro (~334 US) credit for buying at Shop@Home, so the total price for the winning team is worth 500 Euro (~668 US).
  • If you country doesn't have Shop@Home delivery we'll work something out!

Now start working... together :sweet:

FAQ:

Q: I can't send PMs.

A: If you can't PM to other members it means you are still below 10 posts. So first make a few nice posts and that problem will be fixed.

This is such a great contest idea.

Since the Pirate theme disappeared, this part of the forum is much less active. I think (hope) that the contest will give encourage TLG to bring back the pirate theme. The prize seems to be very generous and will surely be a nice incentives to competitors across the world.

I really look forward to seeing the entries which will be, without doubt, amazing.

that's a very cool Idea. Too sad I don't have the time and teammate to do so, that looks like a pretty interesting contest.

I'll think I might follow it closely, stalking the forum to check wips ^^

Ooooh this looks fun. I've always liked the pirate theme, and I use to build for it, but I've never posted any pirate creations online before. Either way the collaboration aspect of this contest makes it all the more exciting! Nemo looking for a teammate?!

Eh I don't have any bricks on me to spare, but have an idea I would love to use. Is i possible that one member designs one set on LDD, and the other does too, except one member doesn't build at all? I can download LDD and design a set there, but don't have any money or Lego sets to use that can fill up that accommodation, if not, that's fine too. Just curious.

As only physically bricks can be entered, your designs have to be build one way or the other. But as this contest is about 'teamwork' you can try to find a partner willing to build the design which you make (with LDD/LDraw).

Just a few question:

how do I calculate the "value" of the MOC kit (to make it similar to 75 euro)? Using mixed expensive and cheap parts?
