Which of these entries (for the 2012 Lego Technic Competition) would you buy, assuming that the price is the same as the basic 9398 4x4 Crawler set? Click on the URL above each image to link to each entry's Gallery, and to check on the number of "Votes" it has. The Competition Gallery has HUNDREDS of entries; the entries pictured below SEEM TO adhere to the Competition Rules. The Top 10 vote-getters will be considered by The Lego Group for the Finals starting on January 1, 2013. 20,000 limited-edition sets of the winning entry will be sold by The Lego Group.

Your poll answers are private; you can pick one or more choices. You can add your public opinions as "Replies" to this topic if you'd like. I will be adding additional (compliant) entries to this topic until midnight on New Year's Eve (December 31, 2012). You can adjust your poll selections as required. Again, in this poll you can indicate more than one entry that you would consider buying. Be sure to add your official "Votes" to each entry below that you "Like"! :classic: The entries appear in "oldest-to-newest" order; the creation titles are not necessarily what the creators named them.

Let's start off with the first 40 compliant entries; more will be added over the next few days. Due to the limits of the poll (20 choices per question), you must select at least one choice in each batch of 20 entries for your poll to count.

You can only vote for one in the second 20...

Oops -- I just fixed it so that you can vote for more than one in the second batch of 20. As more clumps of 20 compliant entries get added later, you can always modify your votes.

@ jorgeopesi: Could you be more specific? Which one (by name) of the 40 entries above has a "problem"?

Of course Dluders, I don´t like the 9398 chassis, If I don´t like the technic part how pretty you put the aesthetics...

Laurents-wuyts yellow jeep has a different chassis too

Folks, as you can tell, it is REALLY HARD to determine what is "compliant' to the rules and what is not. OK, I've removed the note about LandRoverTechnic's Land Rover not being compliant -- I see that it is (except the colors were changed). I added a note to laurents-wuyts' entry that it was not made on the 9398's chassis.

As noted at the beginning of the competition, if The Lego Group would REMOVE the non-compliant entries (basically 80% of the ones posted on the Gallery), it would be SO MUCH EASIER to find the "diamonds in the rough" so that they can garner the official votes that they deserve. This topic is meant to assist Grohl (or other Lego Technic Designers) to weed-out the bad entries and come up with a decent "Top Ten" Finalist list in early January 2013.

Although I voted in this poll and made my official votes in the Gallery, I don't have any "axe to grind" in this competition since I did not submit anything (and won't).

(Sigh) Very well, LandRoverTechnic's entry is NON-COMPLIANT. I changed the posts above accordingly.

It is better for the AFOL community to weed-out the good-looking (but non-compliant) entries that happened to get a lot of OFFICIAL votes BEFORE the Final Top 10 selections are made by The Lego Group. If there's a plagiarized (or non-compliant) entry in the Finals, the entire competition will lose credibility real fast....

The Top 10 vote-getters will be considered by The Lego Group for the Finals starting on January 1, 2013.

http://technic.us.lego.com/en-us/campaign/howtoenter/Default.aspx

To win, your design will need to be selected for the competition shortlist by the LEGO Technic Jury. The Jury will select ten finalists from amongst all the submissions based on the following criteria:

• Overall coolness

• Inspired design details

• Design that people will purchase

• A great colour scheme

• Buildable using existing LEGO Technic elements

• Well thought out functions

• The relationship between your age and your design

We want you to make your design as amazing as possible. However, you need to consider the following when creating your design:

• Designs for military vehicles or vehicles featuring weapons will not be eligible for the competition

• Copies of or design infringements relating to any existing third party property or any other intellectual property right(s) will not be eligible for the competition

We will do our very best to follow your design as closely as possible. However, we have to make sure that:

• We can manufacture the colours you suggest

• Others can build the final model and we can create easy to follow building instructions

• Your design can be built using existing LEGO Technic elements

• The final model is safe to play with

• The frame and mechanics of the 4X4 Crawler, model no 9398, will support your design

To meet the above criteria, we may not be able to follow your design down to every last detail. For safety or other reasons, we may have to change the way a function works and there is a limit to how many bricks we can fit on to the frame. There is also a limit to how heavy, wide, long and high the final model can be, as well as a limit to how many bricks we can fit in the final box.

Between the first and the tenth of January 2013 the LEGO Technic Jury will select the Top 10 candidates that you can vote for online using your LEGO ID – your vote will go toward determining which of the Top 10 is to be produced and launched!

The Top 10 candidates must accept to transfer all intellectual property rights as outlined below. The LEGO Group will contact the Top 10 candidates directly.

Online voting opens on 09 February and closes on 22 February. The winning design will be announced on 22 February 2013. No further prizes will be awarded.

Our design team will work together with the competition winner to develop and build the winning version of the LEGO Technic 4x4 Crawler. The winning design will be produced in a limited edition of 20,000 and will be available online for pre-order from 1 July 2013 at http://shop.lego.com/

Dates to remember

• 31 December 2012 – Last chance to upload your design!

• 9 January 2013 – Short List announced by the LEGO Technic Jury

• 22 January 2013 – Last chance to vote for your favourite short-listed design!

• 22 February 2013 – The winner is announced!

• 22 March 2013 – Online Presentation of the completed 4x4 Crawler special build

• 01 July 2013 – Pre-orders open!

• 01 August 2013 – Official worldwide launch of the winning 4x4 Crawler design

As I understand, shortlist will be selected by Lego Technic Jury, not top-10 votegetters! And after that top votegetter (new vote campaign from 9 th till 22 th january) amongst top10 will be the winner. So at present stage votes does not mean anything. Jury will select top ten for final vote stage.

Iam still wondering about Land Rover - it is does not comply with the rules : " Copies of or design infringements relating to any existing third party property or any other intellectual property right(s) will not be eligible for the competition"

Hopey, the pictures of the landy which are on lego.com says it has no 9398 chassis

Fair enough, withdrawn. I think he made it without the 9398 chassis, then re-did it with the right chassis. If he didn't submit the compliant one, it's his loss.

@ Hopey: No, I suppose we don't but all of those variants were allowed by the Lego Technic Designers to remain in the Gallery.

Future clumps of 20 entries will be posted in a different topic (so that one's poll votes don't have to be deleted to add votes to the newer entries). Let's wait a few days for the dust to settle on these 40 (which are plenty to digest at one time)....

@DLuders: Thank you for taking your time and doing this research with all those links and pictures. Hat off to you for your patience selecting from those hundreds. It helps a lot to get some orientation in the gallery. I wonder if next time in the gallery could be not only filtering/sorting by date "oldest/newest" but also "compliant only".

Concerning the compliance to the rules I will add my two cents: Since also pictures and sketches are allowed, I do not treat models not using the chassis as not valid. But I do not like them, since usage of a chassis which makes the entry look better is a kind of unfair advantage. For me defintely invalid entries are copies of existing models or existing real designs of cars, since this is directly specified in the rules. I have no idea how to deal with entries with tracks: being strict, they are not according to rules, but model can be submitted with wheels and tracks should be put there as extras. May be we can get an answer from TLG so that authors will a chance to make their entries compliant since tracks seems to be very popular.

Looking at the Competition Rules that rm8 reposted above, "The frame and mechanics of the 4X4 Crawler, model no 9398, will support your design." I too did not consider the entries without the 9398's chassis to be "compliant". Tracked entries don't comply either, because Lego Technic Treads are not part of the 9398 chassis. The outline of the existing tires shows no tracks/treads:

Yes, taking the rules word by word, the very first sentence of the rules (in the Create, not the Win section) says: Create a new body design for the LEGO Technic 4x4 Crawler that fits the existing chassis and wheels! So the final model will not have tracks and authors will have to remove the tracks to turn their body designs into valid entries.
