Telehandler - 11 motors !

TELEHANDLER

This is my first MOC in 2010. It was created after I had failed on my two previous creation (not published). I had a hard time with this one - I almost disassembled it! But here it is:

Tech sheet:

Jib retracted.

Length 520 mm

Length with fork: 640 mm

Width: 232

Height: 224

Axle span: 224

Weight: 3088 g

Max speed: 0,11 m/s

Jib:

Min angle: ~ -11 degrees

Max angle: ~ 63 degrees

Length: 480 mm

Length with extended boom: 720 mm

*Length without fork.

Extending time: 30 s

Max operating height: 440 mm

Boom raising: 85 s xD

Boom weight: 715 g

Fork:

Fork span: 64 mm

Length: 90 mm

Width: 162 mm

Height: 112 mm

Building time:

With huge breaks - 7 weeks. But if you count only days I was modifying/adding bricks it would be around 2 weeks.

In MOC I used:

The parts I used. Each motor's application I will describe later.

7,5 m of cables, 11 motors in total.

Functions:

Detailed description is found below this list.

1) 4x4 drivetrain, full independent suspension, 2 shock absorbers per each wheel

2) steering - two modes: normal and crab, steering mode switching

3) Jib raising

4) Jib extendind

5) Fork angle regulation

6) Cabin light (switching ON/OFF)

7) switching on/off of nightime lights (manually controlled)

8) V6 engine dummy

9) raising engine hatch and opening cabin doors (manually controlled)

Drivetrain & Steering:

In vehicle there are two PF XL motors used for propolsion, 2 mediums for steering and another medium for changing steering mode. To stop sliding off the axles from gears in differentials I used hose ribbed (as can be seen in the pic above). The turning radius is very low and vehicle is extremely manouverable (for it's scale of course) due to very short axle span.

Boom raising:

To raise the boom I use 2 medium motors. It may seem that I added the second motor just to increase the motors' number. Please remember the boom weigths over 715 g WITHOUT any cargo. It is 720 mm long when fully extended and can be operated between -11 and +63 degree angle. When you use two LAs and two motors you need to sum the moments and then pass it along to the common shaft. To raise the boom it takes... 85 s :)

Boom extending:

Second part of the boom elongates it for 260 mm. It takes 30 s to extend it and then the maximum operating height is 440 mm.

Fork angle:

I think this is the first fork angle andjustment in Technic forklift. The medium motor is used to adjust the angle and it is at the end of the second section of the boom. The angles allow to hold steadily the pallet on the fork.

Outriggers:

In front there are two outriggers. Although they can't completey raise the front of the vehicle but they allow to raise it a bit - a lot of weight is still supported by the suspension and wheels. They are operated by old motor. I used it to shorten the vehicle for 2 studs.

V6 engine dummy:

On the right side of the vehicle there is an engine dummy propelled all the time by medium motor.

Aesthetics

Cabin:

Is equipped with backlight (remotely controlled), as well as the air conditioning and specialised computers used for controlling of the vehicle. You can open the doors. I had to fit two IRs in the back of the cabin - i know it doesn't look good but it was the only place available.

Hatch:

You can open the engine dummy hatch and see the pistons moving from above and from the right side through the ventilation grate.

Lights:

At the back of the vehicle there is a switch used to control the lights - 2 pairs of white in fron, 2 pairs in front on the boom and 2 pairs of red in the back.

Others:

Two other IRs I managed to hide before the fron axle and behind the outriggers.

Battery box

I managed to locate it at the rear side of the vehicle. It's accessible. With so huge number of motors and electric parts battery's capacity lasts for 15 minutes of fun and then it needs to be recharged:)

What a FANTASTIC creation to start off the New Year! WOW! What a very thorough job you did to describe your work. Now we know why TLG is sold out of the PF motors -- you put them all into this MOC! :laugh:

Very good model, although I'm not fully convinced by the crab steering? Not sure if that is a feature on real telehandlers?

Did you have any problems using 2 individual motors on the two lifting actuators? I would have thought it they may slightly try and lift at different speeds/amounts, just by a tiny bit??

Yes, real telehandlers have that option. It depends, based on a manufacturer, but bigger model have 3 steering modes, here is a quote from random telehandler...JCB 541-70

...Instant steering selection between all wheel steer, front wheel steer and crab steer modes ensures ease of operation...

Amazing piece of work, I also love the fact that at first site it doesn't look too much like a technic model, but the real thing! :thumbup:

Only thing I'm missing in there is a driver?

You used PF to the limit-I just cannot imagine the better usage in another not TrTr MOC :)

But I have a question- how you mount a PF to tilting a fork? I already read presentation in Polish too, but I stil don't have an idea :)

Kondzios, I think this is explanation for your question, if I am not mistaken. Written by Intact himself:

Well I have PF remote controllers so the truth is - I don't need an operator. But it is also truth that it would look stupid without the chair :D

Not really high skill - this is my 4th technic vehicle since Dark Age - and before Dark Age I had only one small Technic set. I'm learning huge amount of skill with each vehicle.

:laugh: I agree completely. I especially like the interior lighting!

Intact, how much do you think your telehandler can lift? I would understand if you don't want to risk breaking the model with unknown weights on the forks.

Not much unfortunately around 70 - 80 g. It would be possible to change the gear ration and extend raising the boom to over 4 minutes xD and it could lift around 250 g and not break.

There is no problem with breaking the model - it's Lego!

Wow, that seems pretty strong for a LEGO model! :thumbup: My main concern was that since your model is so complex, you might have been saddened by a very heavy load breaking the boom and falling on top of the model, causing massive damage and requiring major repairs. :look:

I was thinking that you could add another battery pack for more power to lift heavier loads, since you can only get 15 minutes at a time. On the other hand, you could just remove a motor or two to save power, but then the topic title would have to change... :tongue:

Where would I put another BB ?:) It's much better to replace it and have 30 minutes of fun :) None motor could have been removed :)

The sheer size of it puts a limit on the speed of the motorized functions, but I'm sure it's still fun to play with. Is it child safe as well? That is, can you let a child control it without a huge risk? That would be awesome (because you might be able to drive it at an exhibition).

Thanks you guys! Comments like these allow me to improve my skills and keep on buidling!

My godson (5 yr old) played with it and didn't destroy it (much:P just joking) but probabyl I wouldn't let unknown child to play with it :)

It's better if mechanisms work slow than they don't work at all :)
