Hello everyone and others that shared the love of Forestmen,

This is a great opportunity for me, finally having a chance to review one of the highly acclaimed classic castle set of all times, in the Forestmen era. Indeed it is, I shall bring all of you back in time, in 1987 where castle is at its golden age, where the warring factions are mere humans. As a child, I always dream of having Classic Castle sets with a balance of Classic Town sets in my collection, and now as an AFOL, I am attempting to re-visit history once more, to re-discover those sets which I have missed.

This Forestmen set is part of my brother’s eBay purchase that is precious to him among his collection. I am indeed impressed with the “used condition” of this classical set of more than 20 years which brings back lots of fond childhood memories... :cry_happy:

Name: Camouflaged Outpost

Theme: LEGO System / Castle / Forestmen

Year: 1987

Pieces: 211

Minifigs: 6

Price: USD$23.00

Resources: Brickset, Peeron, BrickLink

An image of a 6066, Camouflaged Outpost

1.jpg

Who are these mysterious forest rangers?

17.jpg

Lurking behind the thick bushes, these armed solders holding bow and arrows, wearing in their green vest and distinct cap. None ever knew their true allegiance as they lived out in this mysterious plot of land where lush greenery and forest are located. Legends proclaim them as the heroic brave Forestmen.

6066 Camouflaged Outpost alternate designs

21.jpg

I really missed these alternate designs provided by TLG. Take a look at the possibilities that can be done onto this Camouflaged Outpost, where there are variants such as windmill, drawbridge and treetop fortress. Such alternate designs simply remind me of the current Creator series which offer 2 additional alternate designs. The only difference is past alternate set designs do not provide instructions, while the current Creator series offer 3 instruction manuals for all different designs.

Instruction Manual

20.jpg

This is a section of the instruction manual where it illustrates the swivel of the outpost’s base.

Green baseplates

2.jpg

In this set, there are 2 green baseplates acting as the layout of the outpost, using both 16 x 16 and 8 x 16 baseplate respectively. These baseplates are extremely useful for building mocs or starting up a forest or garden layout.

Primary building elements

4.jpg

The primary building elements assortment are very useful for any classic castle mocs, consisting mainly black and old gray bricks. It’s no longer possible in present day to obtain the old gray bricks such as 1 x 1 and 1 x 2. These bricks are highly in demand and expensive in BrickLink for building castle MOCs.

Printed parts

5.jpg

These are the pair of old gray panel, with dark gray scattered stones pattern printed on it. These are so much better than pasting stickers to illustrate those patterns.

Green foilages

3.jpg

In the Camouflaged Outpost, you get a whole wide array of green foliages that is great for building forest related stuff. There are a total of 11 green foliages and 2 small green pine trees acting as its backdrop.

Treasure chest, at the side of the steed

6.jpg

This is just a simple highlight of the treasure chest and the quite uncommon brown horse. Back in those days, there is not much gems and stuff like that. It is either treasure minted coins or yellow goblet.

Forestmen, fall in

14.jpg

Attention, the Forestmen of the Camouflaged Outpost in the Northern territories, have fall in to begin inspection. No longer are such large amounts of minifigs available at an affordable price in recent castle sets. These are generic minifigs solders, and yet so beautiful with their different torsos colors representing their levels of participation within the group. The torsos include black, blue, maroon collar pattern and a typical purse pattern printed onto those Forestmen. These minifigs are indeed true beauty.

A closer look at the Forestmen plumes

13.jpg

The different variations of plumes are from blue, yellow, black and red. Among them, the black version is considered quite hard to obtain. Within each plume circle structure, there are other plumes of different colors with different sizes as well, commonly known as medium or triple plums’ design.

Overview of the Camouflaged Outpost

7.jpg

Who could ever guess that this tree surrounded with rocks is actually a hidden outpost on its own? If you didn’t notice the red flag at the top, travelers might actually walk pass without noticing anything peculiar. This is not your typical scenery that you can imagine.

Closer look at the forest tower

10.jpg

12.jpg

Take a look at the forest tower, and observe the different portrayed angles. The tree is constructed by using mainly black bricks. I am not sure if it was supposed to represent as a building, but it’s still an excellent idea with a good combination of black and gray together. There are some window panels at the bottom, serving to watch out for incoming dangers at low areas, and a small tower at the top scouting for threats. Perhaps, it’s supposed to be an abandoned building instead of a tree, I supposed.

Opening up the sides

11.jpg

The Camouflaged Outpost can be opened and extended on a horizontal perspective, making it appear to be a much larger play set. You could easily expand the ground by adding more green baseplates, plants and trees to further conceal its presence.

Hidden side entrance

9.jpg

When you lift up the giant black boulder, it reveals an unexpected side entrance of the Forestmen lair. This is a great way to enter and exit freely without much obvious movements.

Another hidden entrance, but this one is much grand

8.jpg

The grand hidden entrance is actually a giant plate of rocks closely integrated together. Upon activation, it reveals the interior of this outpost where storage of weapons, treasure and horse are kept inside in this large area. With proper adjustment, you can keep a few Forestmen plus a horse inside without others knowing it.

Look at the Forestmen coming in and out of their outpost with ease

16.jpg

15.jpg

See how these Forestmen escort their treasure findings back into their Camouflaged Outpost. It’s just incredible with so much fun and excitement in it, to ensure it is able to reach safely with these well trained archers. The front entrance was lifted to show the interior actions, and it can be closed without much obstruction.

The beautiful interior outpost filled with Forestmen

19.jpg

Incredible playing set of all times

18.jpg

I am very impressed with one of this legendary classic castle set, during the Forestmen era. It’s easily one of the best sets to get, if you are into such themes, where warring factions of the medieval times, it’s these fine heroes that will save the days of the poor villagers from brutal rulers in the highlands.

Indeed, the Forestmen theme portrays much like Robin Hood and his men. To me, there is nothing significant which has failed badly, and in fact, this is the kind of castle sets which just make me feel happy like a child once more for someone whom have grown up with LEGO in the 1980s. That is the special feeling attachment for me.

Summary review

Playability: 9.5/10 (The opening up of the post, lifting the entrances are all of its fun playing factors.)

Design: 9/10 (Highly detailed and simple design illustration of a wonderful camouflaged outpost.)

Price: 9/10 (Back in those days, USD$23 is very affordable, now getting this set as MISB is extremely expensive.)

Overall: 9.2/10 (Highly valued fun playing set with lots of nice minifigs to add along. One of the most enjoyable set ever.)

I gave it a "5" based on my Review Score Card. What about yours?

Hope everyone of you enjoyed reading this simple review of mine. Comments and Critics are strongly welcomed.

One might think that a set like this looks kind of anonymous, but that makes complete sense since it's a secret hideout!

So, piece/price ratio was 10/1 22 years ago too? But this set has a terrific design and SIX figures.

I also rated it 5. Thanks for this review!

The best set Lego ever made (in my opinion, but you know it's true as well...)!

Absolutely brilliant, loved every minute of it, even splurged for a couple boxes (most unlike me...)

God Bless,

Nathan

This was one of the last sets I bought before going into my dark age. It and the other set (Forestmen's River Fortress 6077) have not been disassembled since first built when new. Two of my all time favorites. If only I had gotten the blacksmith shop back then!

-edited to correct name of 6077

I've owned this set since it came out and I have always loved it. I didn't have a lot of forestman sets, but you didn't need a lot of them, you could build an entire world around this one set.

I really need to restore this one and relive the glory! Thanks for reminding me and for presenting this wonderful review. :sweet:

Absolute classic that I luckily own... the minifig count is quite high for the size of the set. Four would have made perfect sense (a red, a blue, a black and the all green torso, which I always thought to be Robin Hood), but you don't here me complaining about that.

Great review Whitefang!

They really should use superb older sets like these as inspiration for new sets. I'd love to see some of the classics get a revival!

This set definitely earns a 5 in my book, same goes for the review. The alternative models also look excellent, which is normally not the case.

I'd give it a 5...Oh wait, I did! This is the BEST set LEGO has ever made! And judging by what other people have written....AWESOME!

I also remember purchasing this set back in the late 80's. Very few sets in my LEGO room stay put together for very long. This one has never come down though.

Thanks Whitefang.

This merits a five from me, no question. The whole set of forestmen (except for the lady) - I loved them, and the design of the set is beautifully simple.

I too got this set when I was a kid, and this fab review has inspired me to recreate it. Anyone have the instructions in full?!

Thanks for the great review. Bought back fond childhood lego memories for me too. Also made me regret not keeping better care of my lego in my younger days because I lost so many sets/pieces from those days.

This is the BEST set LEGO has ever made!

Your fav too? I've always noticed this is the dark horse of the all time great set stakes. A lot of people loudly profess a ship, or classic space model, but 6066 has quite a following as well. Especially when you consider its relatively small size!

God Bless,

Nathan

This set is OK, but it's a little plain. It needs a few things to make it really stand out. I suggest:

- more printed parts

- interior furniture detail

- metallic silver swords, maybe armour as well. shame it didn't come with a black sword.

- an action catapult in the tree-boughs, maybe with giant pine cones (2x2 round brown bricks?)

- flick-fire missiles!

hahaah! Only kidding! This set is perfect just as it is, with a clever simplicity of concept and execution that surpasses all attempts to dress mutton up as lamb by adding all the unnecessary frivolities that often get thrown on in set design these days. The fact that the figs are absolutely stunning doesn't hurt either. This set is definitely a must-have and really deserves classic status.

Lovely review, Mr Fang!

Thanks guys! Your feedback and views towards this incredible castle set means alot to me. I am really excited to review this set, and it's easily one of the best 1980s castle set released. It can modified and change into any settings with its very average piece count but amazing minifigs' count that swept your mind away.

However, I do apologised if some of my images appear to be irregular dark, as I took them on different sessions as half of my previous batch of photos in daytime over the weekend were actually deleted by mistake and I need to re-visit it again. Perhaps, I will try and improve on it, on my next photo session and hope to bring some of my pictures to justice. :sweet:

Absolutely brilliant, loved every minute of it, even splurged for a couple boxes (most unlike me...)

Norro, I wished I could splurged on this set easily. You bought a lot of it back then?

Indeed!

This is a good reminder for you to start your restoration project. I am still waiting for that *ahem* Forestmen Lady set, which I am looking for as well.

You sure complain a lot, don't you?

Anything above is good, except for that flick-fire missiles. Just can't stand it. I like the idea of a black sword.

I shared your sentiments. At least, I did try and influence someone to get this set via BrickLink.

Oh my gosh! It's the Camouflaged Outpost and the foresters. I love it! How I wish I had this little set.

Great review WF. Top notch! Believe it or not, I remember seeing this set on the store shelves thinking, "I want it, but I'm not going to start collecting Lego again". How about that one?

Thanks for sharing this great set with us WF. Are you planning to by the new minifig collection for one more to add to your collection?

As a LEGO Classic collector like yourself, you should get this set for sure.

When was the last time you saw it? :cry_sad:

I want it, and I still want to have it, to add into my collection. After all, this set doesn't really belongs to me.

I don't understand why you have that evil thought of giving it up. :sadnew:

Thanks for sharing this great set with us WF. Are you planning to by the new minifig collection for one more to add to your collection?

Actually, I intended to get the new Volume 4, but judging from my recent purchase of Volume 2, and compared both red ninja produced in 1999 and 2009, the quality differences is too vast, and it disappoints me greatly...

Then again, I might only get one set just to compare them. I miss these LEGO Classic sets. :sweet:

great review, thanks for taking the time to do it. I never could afford this set growing up and only had the forestmen from the minifig pack, but I think I will soon be able to obtain it.

No, I couldn't afford it then, I bought mine on ebay, but I splurged on sets that came with the box (I don't generally collect the boxes, so that is a real mark of respect...)

Guys, thanks for all of your kind words. :sweet:

It pleased me to see many of the collectors adore this set very much.

A great review WF! I recently purchased this set and was so happy I did, you beat me to the review too  Great review of an absolute classic, cheers :classic:

We could always need someone of another opnion towards this lovely set. I will wait for your review.

Oh, now I understand. Indeed, I kept those sets with boxes to retain the memories, even though those boxes are not in very good condition. I don't meant this set, but refer to those classic town sets which I have.

I believe you have a wrong horse though. :classic:

Huh?? Really???

I didn't know that, or aware about it...
