New Elements

344 posts in this topic

Having searched, I found no similar threads, so here's my proposal: given TLG's involvement with their fans, more specifically AFOLs, would they be willing to allow us to submit ideas for new System elements, choose perhaps the two or three best based upon votes, and actually produce them? I know I have often wished for this or that piece, as I'm sure others have as well. So I'm putting this out there for the Ambassadors; would TLG be open to new element ideas from the fans? Naturally, TLG would have the final say based on playability, functionality, safety, and versatility.

My two suggestions would be 1) http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=32013 with the axle connector replaced by half of http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=75535b , and 2) single stud wide ball and socket joints with friction and 90-180 degrees of motion in at least 1 plane, possibly attached to plates. Tall order, I know, but the last time we had friction ball/sockets was with the arm elements:

Excellent thread-idea.

Here´s my proposal for a new part that really would be useful:

There´s nothing I want more than new windscreens. We have many great canopies and some really great sloped windscreens, but all those pieces won´t fit on a 6 stud wide sports car.

We have all these:

21.gif

3823.gif

57783.gif

...

but none of them are 6 studs wide.

The only 6 studs wide piece is this:

4176.gif

And you couldn´t use this piece for a modern car, even if your life depends on it. That´s not a windscreen, that´s a cupboard.

What we need is a 6 studs wide and 3 studs deep windscreen like this:

3939.gif

just higher, or this:

57783.gif

just wider.

Hi!

That´s a good idea to have a thread here about it. I know there´s a AFOL-group that has done a impressive list somewhere, I´ll try to find it and post it here.

Your first idea is something I've always wanted too. Very useful, it would be.

Glad my topic struck a positive chord. As far as I know, not much is really known about the process of creating new elements. I 've noticed over the years that Bionicle has quite a few new molds every year, but System seems to just have a few, and often they are parts with limited usage, such as http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=x1435

Further on my list: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=47905 with an axle hole, and http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=4595 with smooth ends. I wish TLG made an assortment of bricks with similar stud placement. I'd also like a bracket with the base at the bottom, and the bracket part 1 plate wide so that the mini gap could be eliminated. Again, a variety of brackets would be useful, esp 2 stud wide barackets, one with bracket up, the other down. For SNOT building , it'd be greatly useful, I think.

These ideas seem like no-brainers to me; but this is why I'm appealing to the ambassadors. TLG solicits our set ideas, why not element ideas too? I'm a subpar builder, so my ideas are simple; I'd love to see some ideas of the more talented among us.

Well I know one piece I would really like would be a Cheese Slope, but have a stud on the bottom, instead of a stud receptacle. I'm not sure If I'm explaining it very well but I hope you get the general idea.

A cheese slope with a stud on the slope could be very handy in many a SNOT and regular build. The stud instead of socket too.

An element that fits snugly over these:

42022.gif

to provide a similar effect that an inverted slope and a regular slope fit over each other.

I can think of a whole range of pieces I'd like to see designed inversely with a stud rather than a socket. The 1x1 clip would be handy with a stud, too.

Also, 3, 5, and 7 stud long tiles would be handy.

I really would want more pieces with studs on the top and bottom. I agree also with the cheese slope with a stud on the bottom for good snot.

Exactly! I was trying to make the black triangle on the door of this truck, but I couldn't without a cheese slope the has a stud on the bottom.

That's a great idea for a new topic, M'Kyuun!

I'd like to see as new elements:

For a new Western theme:

-cactus

-buffalo

-medicin man's headgear

-headgear for feamle Western citizen or female settler

-swinging door (for a saloon)

-grizzly

For the Castle theme:

-new headgear for the damsel of the castle (no crown!)

-headgear for medieval bishop

For the City theme:

-new hayfork (does not necessarily have to be brown like the original - can be grey, too)

-mobile phone

-little laptop

-set of instruments (for an operating room in a new hospital)

-city scooter

-(school) rucksack

-large cornet of cardboard filled with sweets and little presents given to children in Germany on their first day at school

-pretzel (for a bakery)

For the Star Wars theme:

-Wampa

-Bantha

-tusken raider head (not only a printed minifg head!)

Surely I'll get some other ideas soon, too, and then I'll post them. For now that's all I can think of.

Thanks for reading! :classic:

Great proposals, Klaus-Dieter, except for the one above. I don't think that TLG will produce religious stuff...

I second this! It would be very handy and I´m desperately looking forward to it.

I'd like to see 1x3 tiles, they would be of great use in SNOT works! :cry_happy:

Mentioned above earlier, so we have to subtract your post, CGH. Sorry!

But again I also would like to see them.

Then call it different and keep the silhouette.

They already produce Jedi.

That is a bit ridiculous to say that, they are part of star wars and not a real life religion. But if they do produce religious stuff, then they should make a yarmulke and a prayer shawl.

Thank you very much, Colonel! :sweet:

It's not that I'm that keen on religious staff - but I think in order to have a complete medieval village you should have characters like a hangman, a mayor, a tax collector, ... and even a medieval bishop who is escorted by some guards. It's not that I must have a new part of a headgear for a medieval bishop - if TLG rereleases the mold for the old headgear of the damsel of the castle this would be fine for me since you could then use this part as a headgear for a medieval bishop, too.

Here some more ideas:

For a Roman theme:

-lion

-leopard

-gladiator's helmet

-gladiator's buckler

-trident (for gladiator)

-little web (for gladiator)

-Roman soldier's buckler

-Roman soldier's rucksack with holder for pan, shovel, pickaxe and lances

-Roman soldier's helmet

-feather combination for the Roman soldiers' helmets (different types for legionnaire, centurion, ...)

-laurel wreath for Caesar

-Gallican soldier's helmet

Thanks for reading! :sweet:

First of all, it's called an executioner  . Secondly, I don't think Lego'd be to keen on doing one of them either.

Interestingly enough, Playmobil made an executioner figure, but it was not released, at least not in the USA. It's a strange dichotomy that we can have human, dwarf, and troll figures with huge battle axes meant to slice and chop the enemy, but a guy in a hood with an axe sends kids all the wrong signals. :hmpf_bad::laugh:

On topic, I'd like to see this http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=6541 with half of this http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=43857 attached to the side. I think it'd be greatly useful.

While I'm not opposed to new apparel and minifig utensil parts, if TLG did allow a few fan-based element designs, I'd want them to be as useful as possible across many, if not all, themes. There's been much clamoring over the years for ancient civilization based themes, and I think it's only a matter of time before we see them realized. So I try to focus on elements that could be useful throughout System, and thus worth TLG's while to create them.

And since I've mentioned minifigs, is there anyone else like me who'd love a new System mid-sized minifig that's basically a scaled down version of the truly excellent Technic fig? While I love the minifig (who doesn't?), I think it's time the minifig caught up with current poseability trends and received an upgrade. Along with this new midi-fig, TLG could revive the old, but great, Model Team theme, with much more lifelike and poseable drivers, pilots, and operators. The hands would remain the same, allowing the use of regular minifig utensils.

While plates with studs on both sides indeed would be excellent, I´m clearly more looking forward to new windscreens. How about some backup there?

Yes! The current windscreens are very hard to make a normal car with! please make new windscreens. :sing:

I definitely want the doublesided plates, but yes, I do back you up 100% on the windshields.

A great idea, but I also like the solutions AFOLs come up with to get around problems like this. This is one brick that almost seems to be too good for its own good.
