Castle Community Build

Hi to all Castle enthusiasts, welcome to the Eurobricks Community Castle Build.

Basically we are constructing a walled city with everyday life featured on the inside of these Castle walls. Some of the most creative minds from Eurobricks are involved in what should be a great team exercise. Feel free to sign up or simply comment on any aspect of this project. After all its my your group build

69 Modules and counting!

Guidelines:

You may join at anytime, just post here and we will see you into a team

-Must be keen on Community discussion to build a Castle together

-Should have at least enough light grey to build the wall of your castle section to specifications, see bottom of post for wall dimensions.

-Love to MOC (though this is a given) and give and take constructive criticism too

-Follow the size restrictions per entry as per the castle layout below (thanks to Thrash)

-Be willing to build your modules within a few months of signing up for one of the choices (some people are busy, we understand that)

-Registration is open to any member, regardless of no. of posts etc. Hey we even have a Mod or too signed up!

-Obey all the relevant Forum rules as set out by Eurobricks.

-Images no larger than 800 x 600 please, and maximum of 5 per module unless you post smaller images like Sandy.

-If you have an idea of another structure that would be good to have in the EBCCB, let us know and we can add it to the list.

-More than one person may build a module, we will have a vote off to decide which is prefered. Eventually we will probably have multiples of each anyway.

-Please post your pictures in your team thread, though you may post one pic in the discussion topic.

-Thrash will handle the thumbnail pics, but please post a link to your gallery.

-Most importantly, have fun

Im loving all the great entries so far guys and gals.

Props to Thrash for all the Architect stuff too!

This is the standard for exterior castle wall, please adhere as close to this as possible. Some detailing etc is allowed, however placement on the baseplate and technic pins at 1, 6 and 11 high are necessary.

Roofing may be any colour type you like as each structure is different in the walled city

This sounds like a great idea, ISC! I may even volunteer! I've been wanting to build a Blacksmith's forge for a long time...

[Raises hand]

Count me in for the first run

A 16x16 size sounds good to me.

Are we going to make this "attachable" like the rules defined for other modular builds?

I'm thinking in same dimensions as the dimensions of for example space stations on Classic-Space or Castle modules on Classic-Castle?

I'm an all Fantasy kind of guy, so if the general mood is that this is to be historically correct, then I'll take my leave (no offense meant and none will be taken).

Great idea ISC :classic:

Well lets face it all Lego is fantasy based, and historically correct sounds like a lot of work

Probably best to make them modular to some extent.

Perhaps each topic is put out to the community first to determine what attributes each build has to have. Example Blacksmith cottage must have fire place, anvil, quench etc.

What I am proposing is for 3 to 5 people to put there hands up to build a portion of a Castle. For example the first challenge could be a corner tower or blacksmith forge etc. Say they each get maximum of a month to build and submit their MOC and then the community decides which of the three they like. Then the next 3 to 5 volunteers can build the next part.

This is such a great idea, ISC, but if we contend and build something (and "win"), are we supposed to actually attach it in real-life afterwards? Or only by posting pics?

I mean that, after the contest is over, shouldn't we in some or other way, put these builded parts together in one large castle?

I think that would be neat, especcialy considering the many different building styles that would be used.

I will await more intel before I will consider posting my entry for a builders position, since I already have too few time rebuilding my original Lego sets and my Napo-army....

 for those that contend and for the Clonescreamer !

I think this'll outgrow the initial idea of 3 to 5 members.

Perhaps a rearrangement might prove useful:

Here's what I suggest as an idea for a community build.

We subdivide different things to be build on 16x16 baseplates (towers, walls, gates, blacksmith, stables and so forth)

Each thing get a discussion topic and a post your finished MOC topic.

In the end of the period, a poll for each thing is made, deciding which on to add to the Community MOC.

I'll gladly be the one making and maintaining an index gathering all the strings.

How does that sound?

That's a splendid idea. Which would suit perfectly in the discussion topics

That does sound very good KimT, i was thinking about the same. First we should have a discussion/poll which things exactly are needed or wanted for the castle and then create extra threads for each "castle part" that should be built with polls added which decide what creations will make it to the final castle.

Now we are getting somewhere  I wasn't sure how big it was going to get, but agree that subdividing would be more fruitful as well as quicker to get all sections built.

There is also Zorro's question about combining each build later, and I think if you are happy with your final build you could then reverse engineer to make instructions for others by disassembling it 10 -15 pieces per photo too. Just a thought. :classic:

Also I will start to put a list into my first post of interested people, and we could PM you when its up and running.

Thanks guys and gals

Sounds good to me KimT, it has more of a community feel to it, and its not far from the original idea!

As for my participitation, I will certainly vote and be merry, I may put my name in the buidling hat and crank something out, it would be great fun but I would have to order parts and such, so we will see where my money supply is at. Is there a due date for when people have to be signed up by?

I am not sure a poll is needed.

We ought to just discuss and agree what is to be part of any given module. - Mostly those intending on participating would have an opinion and therefore reaching a mutual agreement on the included things would be better than forcing someone to add things he/she disagrees with.

We are awaiting your command ISC

Dear all,

I would like to contribute as well, but I'm currently a bit "overstretched" financially and timewise by my own MOCs.

But my current castle consist out of modules of 20x20 and 16x16. So I could contribute something design wise?

Although I'm not sure if I want to destroy them in favour of re-engineering. :sceptic:

Kind regrads,

Teddy

Yes i agree now, that would be better.

So, my first question would be, how these creations rawly should look. Should they bey be complete rooms with 4 walls, doors and a roof, or just the interior and say, 2 walls? that's the thing which intersts me the most at the moment. :classic:

I think we should make an attachable rule.

For example:

Each module is to be built on a 16x16 baseplate.

A 2x2 brick with a technic pin hole shall be placed on two opposing sides of the baseplate, leaving 7 studs free for building on each side of the brick.

Another 2x2 brick with a technic pin hole is to be placed 5 bricks higher and directly above the first placed 2x2 brick with a technic pin hole. Making it a total height of 6 bricks from the baseplate counting both 2x2 bricks and the space between.

No overhang is allowed over the sides of the 16x16 baseplate where the 2x2 bricks with technic pin holes are placed.

That should allow a lot of imagination and ideas to still be carried out.

These are the bricks in mind for the attachment rule:

Sounds like a good solution to me. I just rawly built what you described, so it is clear for everybody where to put the hole brcks and how high t should be. I hope i did understand it right myself too

Close, but no cigar

I meant the technic hole bricks should be in the bottom (as in the pic)

And another as brick no6 counting from the bottom. A flip of the 2 bricks in the top is needed for the pic to be correct.

This is NOT a rule yet, just an idea we're discussing.

I'll add my name to the list, it'll be a nice little challenge, if I can ever bring myself to pull apart my almost complete castle MOC. Although if it's not starting for a while, then that'll give me a chance to do a few bricklink orders.

Oh, and metalandi, I think you've got the top two bricks around the wrong way...

EDIT: Yeah, KimT bet me to it.

This is what I thought.

Just one brick taller.

You are right, my mistake.

So what is left is, how to build the sides, and if there should be a roof or not. I think it could be difficult to build a roof that fits to all other castle parts in the end, as everybody might have his own thoughts on that. If a roof is being built i think the best would be to make it modular style so you are able to access the room from above (like the green grocer roof and floors for example). What do you think?

Perhaps we should agree on how wide it's allowed to be in the ends?

For example look at my posted pic a few posts back.

The width is 4 studs, if we agree on a common width, then it would be easier making the modules fit each other.

Also a max heigth on the last 1-2 studs from the sides and inwards might be useful.

For example:

The first 2 studs (counting from the 1x2 bricks with technic pin holes) may not be taller than 10 bricks.

This would leave the issue of wether or not a catwalk is intended.

If a catwalk is intended are we then allowed to "cut" it? One could built the catwalk 1 or 2 studs in on the baseplate and then stop or "cut" it with a roof or tower.

Would that be ok?
