Non-Pirate Mini-Figures Useful for Pirate MOCing?

Some other people and I brought this up in the other thread: there's a new Spongebob set coming out for 2012 that's practically a Pirate set.

There are some good accessories on the minifigs. The ghost guy has a different color & print of Blackbeard's hat and a green shoulder bag. Also I suppose his "legs" could become a grotesque mermaid tail. Spongebob's hat has a nice skull printing on it. And Patrick's torso could easily be a fleshie pirate's torso.

And beyond minifigs, that set has some other parts of interest as well, but that's beyond the scope of this thread, I think.

Here's another one I'm surprised nobody added: The Series 2 Circus Ringmaster's torso would make an excellent British Officer's/Dragoon uniform, or even a "Dinner Dress" (i.e. fanciest) uniform...

Very true. I plan on using his torso to create a Guybrush Threepwood minifig - I just wish the printing on the yellow Han was as good as the printing on the fleshy Han.

Here's a fashion question for anyone who has a better idea of historic fashion than me...

Can I take the ruff from this guy:

And put it around the neck of this guy:

?

The obvious answer is 'yes, this is Lego, you can do anything you like', but just in terms of what historically would make sense, is it suitable in any way? I just want this pirate captain to be distinctive in some way, since I already have one who is pretty much identical but has epaulettes.

I'm not an expert but I'll give you my take on it. Both the ruff and the pirate torso could come from the same period, however the printed ruff on the pirate is what you would expect to see with a shirt and jacket like that rather than the ruff from the actor. Furthermore if you combine them both ruffs will be seen as being worn at once and that is rather weird.

I'm gonna suggest posting in the "Collectible Minifigures Series 8 Rumours and Discussion" topic...you could make a request. Something along the lines of "Would anyone who owns both the Actor and the Pirate Captain be willing to post a picture of the Pirate wearing the Actor's ruff?"

Historically speaking, No... and yes. While there will not have been many (or any) Caribbean pirates in the late 1500 - early 1600s,that the ruff was popular in, due to the islands not being colonized yet, and early on not even discovered yet. But who's to say your pirates aren't into retro fashion?

What makes me happy is being historically accurate! I mean as much as it's possible to be with Pirate Lego. Which admittedly isn't much.

I already have both the Actor and the Pirate Captain, so I know what it looks like... I think it would almost be okay if he wasn't wearing a ruff and a cravat at the same time.

I would say no to pirates in Ruff's it wasn't really their style, If however you have any Conquistador's then that would be fine as that was the style of their era (as the below picture shows).

By the time the Bicorn was in fashion the Ruff had been out of date for over a hundreds of years (1550-1600 for the Ruff) (1700s for the Bicorn). I was all about Cravat and the stiff collar then.

But if you really wanna be accurate with LEGO pirates all the Shako's have to go for a start, so its an ambitious task you have set yourself

I was thinking the same thing... The zombie driver's uniform is almost a dead-ringer for Mexican-American War US Army uniforms, and I was planning on using them as the front line troops for the Tomb Kings (undead factions) inhabiting the Southwest in my post-apoc scenario.

Bicorn's are too late for golden age... but you are 100 percent right about shakos.

Im not seeing any figs that work at all. Hell a lot of the pirate figs from sets are wrong or from the wrong era.

They probably don't belong in this thread because they definitely are aren't 'non-pirate', but I'm not going to make a new thread for them and this is where they fit in best.

I prayed for Bluecoat soldiers, and here they are, although presuming the minifig comes with the wig rather than a soldier hat, all of the army builders are going to need to source their hats elsewhere. Also, not sure if the fig will come with epaulettes.

Edit: Possibly the wig is supposed to go with the Judge minifigure rather than this torso. Seeing how the 'Pirate Captain' minifigure had all the traditional parts from classic Pirate captains, there's no reason to think this soldier won't be the same.

Unfortunately these might be from series 10, we think. But they're definitely from one or the other because they were taken directly from the Lego website, so no chance of them being a hoax.

Brickset is a fansite, but one of their functions is to gather data like these images directly from the Lego website. As I said before, there is no question about their authenticity. Just where and when we will see them.

You're right - it seems to be the Revolution Soldier from this list. However I am not going to hesitate to rebrand him a 'Bluecoat'.
