Hey guys, I made a review from a very iconic set of the company, even for a guy who doesnt know much about Beatles' history like me, LEGO Ideas 21306 Yellow Submarine

32710653362_34a387a0ff_b.jpg

1966 was the year Beatles released song "Yellow Submarine" and during 1968 the animated film featuring Yellow Submarine was released :

So.. to be honest, the "Legend" behind Beatles made me buy this set, but in the end, its a wonderful set for display.

Description from LEGO site:

Quote

Build this LEGO® version of the iconic Yellow Submarine from the famous 1968 film, and journey back to Pepperland with the Fab Four! The submarine features a removable top for easy play, a cockpit that accommodates the included John, Paul, George and Ringo minifigures, two rotating propellers, four periscopes, an adjustable rudder, plus assorted accessory elements that The Beatles have collected on their journey. The set also includes a Jeremy figure. An ideal gift for fans of LEGO® and The Beatles, it’s great for role-play or to create a colorful retro display.

Includes 4 minifigures: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, plus a Jeremy figure.

Theme: LEGO Ideas
Set:  21306  Yellow Submarine
Parts:  534
Figures:  5
Cost: 60 € LEGO (DE) , £55 LEGO (UK) , $60 LEGO (US) , Bricklink

And... Rambi is back for some action!

Heyy there guys! The box is colorful as expected from the film's graphics.

We can see that the adviced age is 10+ , making the set more suitable for the "bigger kids" maybe? because Its a display oriented set in my opinion.

32020461694_716094a52f_b.jpg

At the sides of the box, we can see figures of  John Lennon, Paul McCartney,  George Harrison and  Ringo Starr.

Also from this side we realise how "fat" the packaging is, it has an overall squarish shape.

32822273626_b647a2d6d9_b.jpg

Inside the box, there are some illustrations of the band members at the sides, on LEGO form in one side while in cartoon style at the other side.

Its like as they were looking through submarine's scuttles.

32863494845_411b853b3f_b.jpg

32482259010_25a1facf65_b.jpg

Beautiful illustrations at the outer sides too!

32020462234_f0704e3052_z.jpg 32863496235_b2bcdaf9ba_z.jpg

At the back side of the box, the modular parts of the creation are illustrated, together with a LEGO Ideas philosophy explanation.

We can see that the submarine is of a medium size (25x6.7cm) but nevertheless it has an amazing design and modularity function!

The top pars can be easily removed so you can put/see the minifigs inside it, travelling through the seas!

While opening the seals, another pleasant surprise-illustration pops in front of your eyes.

I really like this style of colourful Art... random shapes random colors and accessories without reason... but a cheerful result in the end!

We have five parts bags and an instruction booklet.

I would expect max 4 bags, but 5 is OK for sure :)

32020463804_6bd73ef4e6_o.jpg

Our instructions booklet...

It has the same graphics as the front side of the box.

32048585753_4339458ed3_o.jpg

At the first spreadsheet we can read a few things about film's history and the set itself.

Regarding the set, Its the 15th set in the LEGO Ideas line and regarding the film, its premier was in London on 17th of July 1968

and is still seen as a groundbreaking piece of animation almost half a century later.

32739753981_9bd4ab9ee4_o.jpg

Follow up, are the classic brick seperator instuctions of the set.

The use of the axle pin to remove axles from holes is a feature I don't usually have in mind while mocing, but its pretty cool!

32020444954_cb9fc9cff1_o.jpg

The first page of the instructions part.

It starts by creating the minifig of John Lennon and the minifig display stand.

How the set is finished in the instructions

32739762411_ef80466ef5_o.jpg

Mini interview with the initial set designer, Kevin Szeto and the final set LEGO designer Justin Ramsden.

Both crazy "Beatles" fans :)

32739763311_6f91753718_o.jpg

All parts included in the set

32048570443_17dd45f4f2_o.jpg

At the final spreadsheet of the instructions, we have the LEGO Ideas procedure explained again.

In my opinion its worth trying LEGO Ideas project. If you have a great Idea you think people will love, don't hold yourself back, upload your Idea  to the platform :)

32048570743_a38f0f4228_o.jpg

At the back side of the instructions booklet, LEGO Group is asking for our opinion regarding our recent purchase through a survey link.

It shouldnt take too long to finish the survey, so why not do it :)

32048571193_89bf334966_o.jpg

Figures of the set

In order: John Lennon, Paul McCartney,  George Harrison και  Ringo Starr

I find George's hairpiece (3rd from the left) very interesting and its available only in this set!

32739784801_645872e2dd_o.jpg

2nd side of the faces

32739785171_607819c795_o.jpg

We can see the back side of the minifigures is plain, without any extra printings on the legs

32863493245_894287249b_o.jpg

At the sides of the leg pieces from George and Ringo there is an interesting red-yellow printed stripe

32020459804_72e94e6c08_o.jpg

Our weird friend, Jeremy:

32020460124_c6789961eb_o.jpg

32863494125_523b1e456a_o.jpg

So... let's start this

Soooo many colors here.... As expected... Lovely!

32020463274_2da657c0fb_o.jpg

Hopefully I rented the clark again...

32482244620_9f4ee293c5_o.jpg

Parts included at the first bag

We can see the grey parts for the minifig display stand and the yellowish-orange parts from Submarine's main body.

32822262506_60e4782082_o.jpg

Some interesting pieces here (something we see for first time, the quarter-tiles)

Introduction of quarter tiles is a big step forward for the design capabilities we can have while creating with LEGO.

32482244990_4e4e44688d_o.jpg

Wow... what's happening here...! :cry_sad:

Something is wrong for sure...

32822262716_d8f4fb1bc0_o.jpg

You stay there now...

The minifig stand is a great Idea, in order to be easier to display the figs.

32822263236_36c5dbb01d_o.jpg

Let's see what we got here...

32048572673_5cb079d484_o.jpg

Let's go for the keel now :sweet:

32822263556_b2c9c78973_o.jpg

Hmmm nice.... headlights?

32822263796_1ecd10f84a_o.jpg

End of Part one

The keel is ready and the minifig stand

32048574273_d4721572d6_o.jpg

Let's go for the second one!

32482249160_dc2bafdb61_o.jpg

Contents of the second bag:

We can clearly see yellow parts dominating here... As expected I would say judgning from the main color of the Submarine which is yellow.

32863487885_b1f32296f3_o.jpg

Interesting pieces (beautiful printed tiles)

32739773831_a637418ee8_o.jpg

Now.. what's that purple plank?

32863488265_fcc61d639f_o.jpg

Let me put the turquoise bits...

32822254956_f61926e586_o.jpg

End of Part two

Inside cockpit there are a lot of cheerful/ hippie style details... They are pretty funny

32020452414_1265708d85_o.jpg

OWww man...

32863488835_29be018ab7_o.jpg

Contents of the 3rd bag:

Now is the turn of orange and printed parts  I guessxD

32822255976_7bbccf0a09_o.jpg

Interesting pieces (the rectangle tiles and hairpiece are lovely, just look at that great printed pipes, an amazing piece to use at MOCs)

32482251230_f58f59dc1a_o.jpg

Oww.. I am starting to get tired

32020453224_8a8e681da5_o.jpg

I think this should go right... here

32863489585_fc437ddaac_o.jpg

End of Part three

The body of the Submarine is starting to get shape, the printed tiles inside it look very pretty.

32739756231_62b80ae22b_o.jpg

Let's see what fourth bag has inside it...

32709894362_83ca6f4fb0_o.jpg

Contents of the bag:

32863490305_4241347c5d_o.jpg

Interesting pieces (Those plates with the rounded corners are pretty useful, also the quarter-tiles are here again and finally those fancy reddish brown axles are cool)

32709894982_ece8581c6e_o.jpg

Let me put the rudder on...

The tail design is pretty elegant, with this nice curve over there... Also the red propellers contrast nicely with the yellow of the rest body.

32863481165_4f92cd0ee0_o.jpg

End of Part four (Its starting to get shape, and all of our minifigures are ready)

32863490685_ba69c21dd8_o.jpg

Let's go for the fifth and final part

32863490945_2c6a09ebb7_o.jpg

Contents of the fifth bag:

We can see the White color is dominating here.We gonna create the base of the submarine with white parts.

32709896382_5859a4fa3f_o.jpg

Interesting pieces ( our strange friend, quarter-tiles,the colorful pipes and final the green apple which hasnt been in any set since 2004!)

32739780261_1602f80b2d_o.jpg

So many sausages

A really clever design :)

32482255160_6aab92219e_o.jpg

The submarine is finished...

The various pipes at the top looking at different directions look amazingly well and is the characteristic point of the whole design.

Now let's go for its base!

32863481595_305aa8941b_o.jpg

Final Result

Side

The trans-red circle tiles contrast beautifully with the yellow/orangeish color of the main body.

32863492015_4b389f495c_o.jpg

In front

The front circle dome used as submarine's nose is great piece usage...

Critique:

A very beautiful set in a not so overpriced price point, taking account that its a licensed and also LEGO Ideas set.

Cute curves all around and a great premium packaging!

Design: 9/10 A very well made set, from its sausages to its pipes... simple perfect
Price/pieces: 8/10 It contains a lot of pieces and figures, of course it isnt the appropriate choice for someone who is interested exclusively for pieces and not for the minifigures which dramatically raise its price.
Playability: 9/10 A very beautiful set, not so much play oriented, mainly for displaying purposes I would say.
Construction: 10/10 A very interesting and colorful construction with nice curves
Total: 9/10 A great set that would perfectly fit your living room's corner, specially if you are a Beatles fan.

Wow! What a review! I did one of the Yellow Submarine by myself a couple of days ago, but yours is just so much better. All these photographs! :classic:

Its indeed a pretty sweet set and does great as a display piece. Also fun to see that you enjoyed the hotdog-railing as much as I did

I also notice some slight overexposure on some of the pictures. That's very much the same issue I often have with white sets on white backgrounds. Anyway. Awesome review and a set that just makes one happy!  :classic:

I usually throw my boxes away but dang, I could NEVER throw this box away. Wonderful review!

Never bought an ideas set. Is this the only one that's actually has a design on it?

Great review btw, @Gunman this one looks like a straight hot dog.
